‘The Chosen’ Clip of Angels Ready to Rescue Jesus Ignites Online Debate

A 22-second clip from the upcoming season of The Chosen sparked debate online Monday after director Dallas Jenkins shared footage depicting what appeared to be warrior-like angels, with some fans calling the portrayal biblical and others questioning how much artistic license the scene takes.
Apparently set during or after Jesus’ arrest, the clip seems to show angels rushing into position, invisible to the Roman soldiers and ready to rescue Jesus if He gives the word. One carries a spear, another a bow and arrow, and a third a sword. But Jesus, portrayed by Jonathan Roumie, shakes His head as if to tell them to stand down.
Jenkins shared the clip without extensive commentary, writing only on his Instagram account: “So yeah…I did something a little different this season.” The official account of The Chosen soon chimed in, too: “Not Dallas casually breaking the internet.” The scene in question is part of Season 6, which launches Nov. 15 on Prime Video and spotlights the crucifixion.
“The Princes coming to the defense of their King!!!” one person wrote on Jenkins’ page.
“Not gonna lie, a little nervous. Looks like a scene from Twilight. I actually loved Twilight. … but it was about vampires lol none of that is real,” another person wrote.
Jenkins later wrote under a comment on his own page: “This edited clip wasn’t meant to be fully understood just yet. That’s what the full episode is for. :).” He added, “This season represents some of God’s economy of time and space” -- and later said of the interpretations, “Some folks think they know, some folks don’t.”
The debate spread to X/Twitter, too.
“I like the idea that Angels are represented by different cultures, because the Bible tells us that Angels and Archangels are all across the world, doing battle with the powers and demonic princes that rule over cities and nations,” one person wrote. “... I've really liked this show up until now, and I'm still going to save the entirety of my judgement for when I can actually watch the episodes.”
Fans who defended the scene pointed to Matthew 26:53, where Jesus says after His arrest, “Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?” A few fans who had already seen the full episode said the scene made more sense in context.
Others argued that the scene strayed from Scripture.
“Just when you thought The Chosen couldn't get any more unbiblical, they go and outdo themselves,” one critic wrote.
Still others defended the show’s choice to depict the angels as warriors from different cultures.
“To all the ‘disappointed’ Christians out there saying that angels don't look like Native Americans... did you miss that there is also an asian warrior as well as a South American warrior?” another person wrote. “Jenkins is telling us a story here that transcends time. God's angels have been working alongside humans from the very beginning. And btw... angels can look however God wants them to.”
