‘The Truth’ Singer Megan Woods Shares How Christ Redeemed Her Feelings of Unworthiness

The Christian singer behind the No. 1 hit The Truth says the song grew out of her personal battle with identity. Megan Woods' The Truth climbed to No. 1 on multiple Christian airplay charts as well as on Billboard's Christian Digital Sales chart -- and was even nominated for Song of the Year and Breakout Single of the Year at this year's K-Love Fan Awards.

The lyrics describe her falling for the world's lies about identity before she realizes that "the truth is I am my Father's child" and "was made in the image of a perfect King."

"I wrote the truth out of my deepest struggles," she told Crosswalk Headlines. "I grew up going through bullying and verbal abuse as a kid, so I just felt not enough. I felt unworthy a lot. And it took me to my adult years, where I just realized: What is wrong with me? Like, I feel like I just don't add up anywhere I go.

"And it wasn't until I dove into the Word of God, and had a moment with the Lord in a really low moment. And the song kind of came from that moment of finding my true worth, my true identity in Christ."

It was written by Woods, Matthew West, and Jeff Pardo.

"We just knew that that song had to be about my story and testimony and who we are in Christ, and I wanted to write an anthem."

The song has resonated among music fans who identify with Woods' struggle and are searching for hope. CCM Magazine called it the "largest debut single launch in the past two and a half years." The official music video on YouTube has 5.3 million views.

"I think that we need Jesus more than ever," Woods said. "I think this message is for such a time as this -- because with social media going on, there's so much comparison and so much confusion about who we are. So I think it's just speaking to so many people. And I think a lot of people struggle with feeling unworthy, and so this song is just meeting people where they're at."

Meanwhile, Woods recently released a new single, I Believe YouThat songshe said, is "about a season I walked through recently where I lost hope and things looked so impossible."

"And I remember just actually thinking I wasn't going to make it through," she said. "... I was reminded of the Bible verse, Isaiah 40:31, where it says: But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.

"It's an encouragement that God's fighting for youand He's fighting for me."
