The World Series MVP is a man of faith with a broad smile who writes the Spanish word for “God” in the dirt before batting, wears a tattoo reflecting his beliefs, and openly credits God in postseason interviews.

Milwaukee’s William Contreras helped power the Brewers’ championship run with a .373 postseason average, three home runs, and nine RBIs in 13 games -- capped by hitting .381 and driving in four runs against Tampa Bay to earn World Series MVP honors.

The Brewers defeated the Rays 4-1 on Wednesday to win the series four games to one, securing the franchise’s first World Series championship in its 58th season. The team began play in 1969 as the Seattle Pilots before moving to Milwaukee and becoming the Brewers in 1970.

“This was a very blessed year,” Contreras told a room full of reporters after the game. “You know, it was a year that we have to give God a lot of thanks for everything that He's been able to do for us. We worked very hard for this from the very beginning in spring training up until now.

“To be able to achieve it, it's special.”

The Venezuela native often writes “Dios,” Spanish for “God,” in the dirt before stepping to the plate. He also has the word tattooed on his neck, a reminder, he has said, to keep God present wherever he goes.

After the final outs in both the NLCS and the World Series, Contreras pointed heavenward and appeared to offer a prayer of thanks.

“Throughout these playoffs, I’ve been talking a lot with God, asking Him to keep me healthy for the games,” Contreras told El Extrabase.

On Wednesday, his sixth-inning RBI double to deep left field gave Milwaukee a 3-0 lead and brought thousands of Brewers fans at Tampa Bay’s Tropicana Field to their feet.

Contreras wasn’t the only Brewer driven by his faith.

Reliever Aaron Ashby, starting pitcher Dustin May, second baseman Brice Turang and centerfielder Garrett Mitchell are among the other Brewers who say faith in Christ is central to their lives.

After Ashby powered the Brewers to an NLCS series’ sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers, he told a televised audience that prayer was key to giving him peace on the mound.

“I wouldn’t be here without that,” Ashby told CBN Sports, referencing his faith. “It’s such a special thing to me and my family, our faith. To be able to really rely on that in these moments has been so cool. The amount of peace that I didn’t think I would feel but I do feel has been overwhelming and undeniable. To have that cornerstone foundation for myself has been the most important thing this postseason.”
