A 12-year-old gives old stuffed animals a new purpose by donating them to children in need. When a child loses everything in a home fire, a stuffed animal cannot replace what was lost, but it can offer something just as important in those first frightening hours: comfort. Sadie Hutson of Dobson, North Carolina, understands that, and the 12-year-old decided to take action.

Sadie and her mother visit thrift stores to rescue worn and damaged stuffed animals that might otherwise end up in the trash. Together, they longingly wash, repair, restuff, and restore each bear, rabbit, and beloved toy by hand, giving every one of them a second chance at being loved and a chance to comfort someone else.
Earlier this year, the American Red Cross in North Carolina put out a call for help after running low on stuffed animals for its disaster response efforts. Sadie answered in a big way, donating 114 restored stuffed animals for children affected by home fires and other disasters.
"Hearing the stories was a little heartbreaking," Sadie said. "That's why I did it."

For Jon McCollum, a disaster program specialist with the American Red Cross, Sadie's generosity reaches far beyond the number of toys she gave. "A lot of times children get overlooked in the initial stages of a disaster," Jon said. "We want to make sure they are taken care of immediately as well."
Recently, Jon and fellow Red Cross volunteers honored Sadie with an award at the Central Surry Volunteer Fire Department, but recognition was never her goal. Sadie was hesitant to share her story publicly and agreed only because she hoped it might inspire other young people to serve their own communities.

"As long as you do it through the kindness of your heart, you can do it," Sadie said.
What began as a simple mother-daughter project has become an ongoing mission, and Sadie is still rescuing and restoring more stuffed animals, knowing each one will one day rest in the arms of a child walking through one of the hardest moments of their life.
