13-Year-Old Jumps into Lake to Save Child Stuck under the Dock

But in an instant, the joy shifted. A mother’s panic cut through the noise. Her son, just 11 years old, had vanished beneath the water. He couldn’t swim. And no one could see him. Most people froze. Gauge didn’t.
Gauge Jumped into the Lake
“There were a whole bunch of kids on the docks, just running, doing jumps, belly flops,” he explained. “Then someone said they thought they saw someone under the dock. His mom came over and said, ‘Have you seen my son? He doesn’t know how to swim.’ And I just sprung into action.”
Gauge dove into the lake’s murky water again and again. Visibility was near zero. It wasn’t until another swimmer handed him a pair of goggles that he could finally see.
The boy was there, beneath the dock, caught in the tangle of lake weeds.
Gauge acted fast.
He Fell Out of His Arms, But He Grabbed Him Again
“I swooped him up. I had his arms like a T-shape and wrapped my arms around his ribs and his back so he wouldn’t fall out,” Gauge said. “I used one hand to get up as much as I could, and he fell out of my arms, so I had to grab him again.”
He was running out of air. But he didn’t give up.
Thanks to Gauge’s quick actions, the boy was pulled onto the dock where others jumped in to help with CPR until first responders arrived. The boy is now stable in the hospital — alive because a teenager refused to stand by and watch.
“If someone needs help, he’s the first one willing to do that,” said Courtney Bryant, Gauge’s aunt. “So, me and my family are extremely proud of him.”
Gauge Got the Praise
And they’re not the only ones. The Everett Fire Department praised Gauge for his bravery and emphasized how crucial water safety is, from constant supervision to knowing CPR.
But what can’t be taught? That instinct to act when someone else is in danger.
Gauge didn’t do it for the praise or the headlines. He did it because he saw someone in need and didn’t think twice.
And maybe that’s what heroism really is — not the absence of fear, but the decision to dive in anyway.
Joshua 1:9 "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."
