18-Year-Old Walks Away Barefoot After Giving His Shoes to an Elderly Man in Need

An 18-year-old gave an elderly stranger the shoes off his feet and became his friend after noticing him outside a Walgreens in Maricopa, Arizona.

Jordan Hope was headed to the bank when he spotted an older man whose shoes were barely staying on. He could have continued with his errands, but he felt God prompting him to turn around. So Jordan stopped, took off his own shoes, and gave them to the man he would come to know as Mr. Roy.

“I just felt like God told me to go over there, turn around and just give him some new slides,” Jordan said.

Someone nearby captured the kindness on video. But the sweetest part of this story happened after Jordan drove away and felt he needed to go back.

Giving Away His Shoes Leads to an Unexpected Friendship

Inside Walgreens, Jordan found Mr. Roy trying to buy candy and paid for it. As they talked, he learned that Mr. Roy’s wife had died just two weeks earlier.

Suddenly, there was so much more to this encounter than a pair of worn-out shoes. Here was a man learning to get through his days without the woman he loved.

“That honestly broke my heart,” Jordan shared. “I just think he needed a friend.”

Jordan invited him to lunch, but severe swelling in Mr. Roy’s legs made getting into his car difficult. So he arranged a rideshare, met him at Culver’s, bought food, and followed him home. Then he stayed to talk.

What a tender thing, to finish an errand with someone willing to sit awhile and listen.

Jordan Keeps Showing Up After Learning About Mr. Roy’s Loss

And Jordan kept showing up. He began checking on Mr. Roy by phone every day, and a fundraiser brought others alongside him to help with groceries and expenses.

Jordan credits his parents, youth pastor, and faith for teaching him to care for others.

“He interrupted my plans for that day to carry on his plans,” Jordan said about our wondrous heavenly Father.

One Interrupted Errand Becomes a Beautiful Act of Faith

Sometimes loving our neighbor begins with paying attention. A pair of shoes, an invitation to lunch, a phone call the next day. Jordan’s kindness reminds us how beautifully God can use a willing heart to turn an ordinary errand into a friendship.
