Brave 3-Year-Old Uses FaceTime to Get Help for Mom During a Seizure

A brave 3-year-old uses FaceTime to get help for mom during a seizure. If you have ever caught your toddler copying your words, your expressions, or something you really hoped they hadn't noticed, you already know: those little eyes are always watching. And thank the Good Lord, 3-year-old Emi was watching, listening, and learning, because when her mom needed her most, this tiny Texas girl knew exactly what to do.

Earlier this year, Emi was home in Rusk, Texas, with her mother, Aiden Wilkie, when Aiden suddenly suffered a grand mal seizure. There was no other adult in the house.

“I didn't know what was happening, I couldn't hear or see anything, so it was all up to her,” Aiden said.

She Uses FaceTime to Call Her Grandparents for Help

It was all up to a little girl who had only recently turned 3. But Aiden and her family had been teaching Emi what to do if something happened to Mommy. She knew she should FaceTime Nani or Pawpaw. So that's exactly what she did. Emi managed to call her grandparents, who were nearly 700 miles away in Georgia. Then she stayed beside her mom while they helped her through what came next.

And this is the part that might undo every mama reading this. “The only thing that I do remember from everything is the fact that she was rubbing my hair,” Aiden recalled. She could briefly hear Emi reassuring her, “Mommy, it's going to be okay.”

The Brave Little Girl Helps First Responders Find Them

Her mom was having a terrifying medical emergency, and this little girl did what she had probably seen the grown-ups who love her do countless times before. She comforted her. Then Emi kept going. Following her grandparents' instructions, she helped first responders locate the family's apartment. When paramedics arrived, they were told to look for a tiny girl standing in the doorway calling out to them.

“Very courageous and very brave,” EMT Tim Spurgeon said. But perhaps no one understands the magnitude of what Emi did better than her mom.

“She is, for sure, my hero above anything else,” Aiden said. There is something beautiful tucked inside this frightening story for every parent. We spend so much time wondering if our children are listening.

Her Courage Shows Why Teaching Kids What to Do Matters

They are. They watch us tap the FaceTime button. They hear the instructions we repeat. They notice how we care for someone who is hurting. They absorb far more than we realize while they're busy coloring pictures, watching Paw Patrol, and asking for another snack.

And every once in a while, we get a glimpse of what all that watching has planted inside them. For Emi, it became courage when her mama needed it most. Thank God this little girl had been watching.
