70 Years Married and Still Smiling: ‘We’re Going to Take It Another Year’

It All Started at the State Fair
“He invited me to the fair, and that was our first date. Yes, the Minnesota State Fair," Janet said. "I thought he was really good looking, and I thought, 'My sister would like to go out with him. "And I thought she was really cute," Edward said. "She came into my office with her red belt and shoes, and I thought, 'Holy cow, is that a cute girl.'"
Married for 70 Years
They wed on Aug. 20, 1955, and have been married for 25,568 days as of the 20th.
They say they never get tired of each other.
"I give her a hug every morning, and I hug him back," The couple said. "And say, 'We made it another day!'"
Edward turned 97 in April, and Janet is 89. They raised their five kids in Bloomington, Minnesota, and are proud grandparents of seven and great-grandparents of five.
The Trick to a Long Union: Love
They were asked if there was any “trick” to making it 70 years together.
"First of all, you have to be in love with this woman," Edward joked.
"Like Ed said, you have to really love the person you're working with and realize everything isn't going to be OK all the time," Janet said.
"We held hands and said, 'Let's ask God if we can grow old together.' And here we are," Janet said. "We're going to take it another year."
God certainly answered their prayers! I hope they stay blissfully married for many more years.
“Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” - 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
