Surprise KFC Parking Lot Birth Gives Baby Cody a Nickname He May Have for Life

A surprise KFC parking lot birth gives baby ‘Cody’ a nickname he may have for life. My youngest made a speedy entrance, too. I was induced twice, and when she finally decided to join us, she arrived in under 25 minutes, weighing ten pounds, two ounces, surprising everyone with her size and character. It became quite a birth story in our little town. But at least we made it to the hospital.

Katie Murphy and Stephen Kirby were still on the road when they realized their son wasn’t going to wait.

The couple had visited the hospital earlier that day, but returned home after being told everything was fine. Dreading being sent home again, Katie decided to wait, but her contractions continued, growing stronger through the evening. Around 9 p.m., they got back in the car for what should have been a half-hour drive to the hospital.

Halfway there, Katie knew the baby was coming. Stephen was on the phone with an ambulance dispatcher, trying to explain where they were on the A38 near Bromsgrove, in England. Then he spotted a familiar KFC and pulled into its parking lot.

Katie could already feel the baby’s head. Stephen hurried around to the passenger side, opened the door, and caught their son as he was born at 9:35 p.m.

Gives Birth In A KFC Parking Lot

“When the ambulance dispatcher was trying to locate our location, the only place we could find was the KFC,” Katie said. Paramedics arrived shortly afterward and took Katie and the baby to the hospital, with a stunned Stephen following in the car.

Their son, Cody, weighed seven pounds, eight ounces, and is doing well. His parents have also given him a nickname that might follow him for years: Colonel Cody.

“We call him Colonel Cody, and I think that nickname will definitely stick with him for life,” Katie said. She added that the family plans to take him back to KFC for his first birthday. Even the midwifery staff ordered KFC for dinner. I hope someone saved Katie a plate. Giving birth in a car takes a lot out of a woman, and she’d earned more than a side of biscuits.

The Family Plans to Celebrate Where It All Began

The restaurant sent Cody’s family gifts and vouchers to celebrate his unusual arrival. Someday, he’ll get to tell his friends that his dad caught him in a KFC parking lot while his mom was on the way to the hospital. That’s a story worth saving for every birthday.
