Young Florida Boy Reads to Shelter Dogs to Help Them Feel Loved While They Wait for Adoption

A young Florida boy reads to shelter dogs to help them feel loved while they wait to be adopted. And if this story doesn't make your tail wag at least a little, you might want to check your pulse. At just 11 years old, Nehemiah Turner has discovered that sometimes the best stories aren't simply found between the covers of a book. Sometimes they are curled up beside you with four paws, floppy ears, and a heart waiting for someone to take them home.

For more than two years, Nehemiah has been visiting the Jacksonville Humane Society in Jacksonville, Florida, with his grandmother as part of the shelter's Pawsitive Reading program.
Yes, “Pawsitive.” We're already off to a fetching start.
Jacksonville Humane Society CEO Lawrence Nicolas said Nehemiah's recognition is well deserved. "Nehemiah's story perfectly embodies our core belief at the Jacksonville Humane Society that generosity breeds joy,” she said. "In a world where we've become increasingly reliant on screens, here is a young man who quietly set a goal to help homeless animals by reading books and, in doing so, has inspired his entire community."
Nehemiah Reaches 100 Volunteer Hours at the Shelter
The program gives children a chance to practice reading while providing shelter animals with something they desperately need: quiet companionship. Nehemiah took that assignment to heart. He recently became the first child in the program to log an incredible 100 volunteer hours, curling up near shelter dogs and reading story after story aloud.
“Soothing, feels good, calm, comforted animals, not like a whole bunch of barking is happening,” Nehemiah said of what happens when he reads to them. In other words, this kid knows how to work a ruff crowd.
But underneath all the adorable dog puns is something incredibly tender. Shelter life can be stressful for animals surrounded by unfamiliar sounds, smells, and people. Nehemiah hoped the sound of his voice might help anxious dogs settle while they waited for someone to choose them.
One Shelter Dog Named Hopper Stole His Heart
One dog in particular stole a chapter of Nehemiah's heart. His name was Hopper. Hopper spent nearly 400 days waiting for his forever family, and during Nehemiah's visits, the boy kept coming back to read to him. Page after page. Visit after visit. Finally, Hopper got the ending everyone had been hoping for. He was adopted. And excuse us while we paws to collect ourselves.
Even though he couldn’t rescue every dog himself, he used his superpowers of reading, a good book, and his presence, sitting with the scared pups who were waiting and giving them his time. For a shelter dog, perhaps there is something powerful about that kind of presence.

And Nehemiah isn't closing the book anytime soon. He plans to keep reading because there are still more stories to tell, more furry listeners who need a friend, and, hopefully, plenty more happy endings waiting to be written. Because sometimes the sweetest happily-ever-after doesn't end with “The End.” It ends with a wagging tail headed out the shelter door toward home.
