Custodian answers a family's plea for a kidney donor with a life-changing yes. This story is the very definition of Jesus' hands and feet. Andrew Allen of Boston, Massachusetts, works as a custodian at Boston Arts Academy, the kind of man who serves quietly behind the scenes. But when he heard that a teacher at the academy, Thomas Thermidor's brother, desperately needed a kidney, Andrew did not hesitate. He said yes.

Here is where this story becomes a miracle with moving parts. Andrew's kidney turned out not to be a match for Thomas's brother himself, but Andrew refused to let that stop him. He donated anyway, giving his kidney to another patient in need, and that selfless act moved Thomas's brother up the transplant list. Today, Thomas's brother has a new kidney, and both he and Andrew have recovered from their surgeries.
The two men first met on the fifth floor of the school and grew close over the years, so when the plea went out, Andrew sprang into action. Tyrone Sutton, the head of Boston Arts Academy, said Andrew's generosity surprises no one who knows him. "He goes way out of his way to do great acts of kindness," Tyrone said.
His Kidney Donation Helps Another Family Find Hope
Last week, on National Custodian Day, the school honored Andrew with its Unsung Hero Award at a ceremony where he and Thomas embraced in front of everyone, the servant finally standing in a spotlight he never asked for. "Today, we celebrated the power of service, generosity, and community," the school wrote.
Tyrone believes Andrew's story carries a word for all of us. "With all of the upheaval in the world, I think [he is] just a reminder of the good that is still out there," Tyrone said.
Andrew’s Quiet Service Becomes a Powerful Example of Love
Andrew Allen cleans hallways for a living. But heaven keeps a different job title for a man who gives away a part of himself so that others can live. That is not just kindness. That is the Gospel with work boots on.
