Dolly Parton Corn Mazes Are Cropping Up Nationwide in a Sweet Tribute to the Country Legend

Dolly Parton corn mazes are cropping up nationwide in a sweet tribute to the country legend. Here in Nebraska, corn is what I see when I look out of nearly any window in my house. It fills the view all summer, and come fall, getting lost in a corn maze is practically a Midwestern tradition. But this year I’d happily take a wrong turn or two if it meant finding myself somewhere in Dolly Parton’s hair.

Twenty farms across the United States and Canada have carved mazes celebrating Dolly, complete with her bright smile, big curls, and familiar name. The tribute was planned months before she died in August. It was meant to bring families together and support her Imagination Library, which gives free books to young children. Now those paths through the corn hold a little more tenderness.

The Mazes Support Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library

At Twins BBQ in Brookfield, Connecticut, Dolly’s face fills a five-acre maze beneath the words “An American Treasure.” Co-owner Danielle Gallop said Dolly’s passing made the tribute “exponentially more meaningful.” Families have shown up in cowboy boots and Dolly shirts, ready to spend an afternoon remembering her together.

“We’ve had people in cowboy boots and cowboy hats and Dolly Parton shirts,” Gallop said. “It’s been really great to see all the love pouring out for her,” Danielle said.

Dolly’s Passing Makes the Tribute Even More Meaningful

And yes, those famous curls are as tricky to navigate as you might imagine. “I got lost several times,” Danielle said. I think Dolly would have gotten a kick out of that.

I can picture the children racing ahead between the stalks while their parents call, “Wait for us!” Maybe the family stops for a photo. Maybe everyone laughs when they realize they’ve circled back to the same spot, and later, a little one opens a book at home because people came out to walk a maze and support Dolly’s work.

That’s the part that stays with me. Dolly gave children stories they could hold in their hands and ask someone to read one more time. She understood how much can begin when a child opens a book, and someone they love settles in beside them because a good book can take you to so many places in just a few pages.

Tomorrow morning, I’ll look out at our cornfields again. I’ll be thinking of all those families finding their way through Dolly’s smile, and of the books still finding their way to children. What a beautiful thing to grow.
