Flight Attendant Helps Overwhelmed Mom Mid-Flight With a Heartwarming Act of Kindness

Flight attendant Monique Harris helped an overwhelmed mom mid-flight with a heartwarming act of kindness. The mother and her infant son were on a flight from Newark, New Jersey, to Grand Rapids, Michigan, but their journey had begun much farther away. She had given birth while visiting Colombia, then spent more than two months trying to bring her baby home to the United States. By the time she met Monique, she was traveling alone and running on very little rest.

And we’ve all been in her shoes with exhaustion that is unimaginable and a fussy baby in need of rest, but you’re sitting in a tin can 35,000 feet up in the air and surrounded by strangers. So Monquie did what she does best; she gave the mom a much-needed break.

Monique struck up a conversation with her, as she often does with passengers. She learned about the long weeks in a hotel, the effort it had taken to get home, and the little boy everyone had nicknamed “Gordo.” As Monique went about her work, she kept an eye on the pair.

The mother began to doze, and her baby slowly slid down her lap. Monique stepped in and offered to hold him so she could sleep.

“The baby wasn’t on the brink of a fall, but just had slid down off [the mother] because she was just tired, and I just intervened,” Monique said.

His mom was exhausted, and Monique saw a simple way to help. And it’s in the simplest acts that warm our hearts a 1,000 times over, I think.

A Simple Act of Kindness Gives the Mom a Much-Needed Break

At first, the mother worried about burdening her. Monique assured her it was no trouble. She is a mother of two herself, and she knows how much it can mean when someone offers a hand before you have to ask for one. So she held Gordo while his mom got a little rest.

Her Faith Shapes the Way She Cares for Others

A photo of Monique with the baby later drew more than 200,000 likes online. The attention surprised her. Helping parents and other passengers is part of how she goes about her day, whether she is on a plane, at church, or in a grocery store.

“I didn’t think that it was anything spectacular, because this is what I do every day,” she said.

Monique credits her faith for the way she cares for people. On that flight, it looked like noticing a mother who had carried so much for so long, then carrying her baby for a while. Sometimes that is the kindness we need most: someone who sees how tired we are and gently says, I’ve got him. You can rest.
