Golden Retriever Becomes a Loving Caregiver After Wife’s Alzheimer’s Diagnosis

Golden retriever becomes a loving caregiver after wife’s Alzheimer's diagnosis. For Donna Aho, her best friend didn’t share her last name, but her dog, Skye, shared cozy mornings on the couch, greeted her after long days at work, and comforted her in so many different ways that only dogs can. That’s the beautiful mystery of a dog’s love.

Her husband, Michael Aho, remembers the day they brought Skye home after rescuing her from a puppy mill. "She was a little puppy. She came running through, knocked the water bowl over and jumped into my lap. Right into my lap. And I go, 'I'm done for,’" he recalled

After Donna was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, Michael began noticing something remarkable about their 10-year-old golden retriever, Skye. With all four paws, she quietly stepped into the role of caregiver. As Donna's condition progressed, Skye seemed to sense changes no one had taught her to recognize. Whenever Michael left the house, Skye immediately shifted her attention to Donna, faithfully staying by her side.

"This dog knows that if I leave the house for any reason, she's in tune with my wife, Donna," Michael said.

Golden Retriever Becomes a Loving Caregiver

One night, Skye's devotion became impossible to ignore. Donna was experiencing nighttime tremors related to Alzheimer's while Michael slept beside her. Suddenly, Skye rushed to Donna's side of the bed, barking until she woke from the frightening episode.

It's hard not to see God's fingerprints in moments like these. Sometimes His comfort comes through whispered prayers. Sometimes it arrives through the steady presence of a loyal dog who refuses to leave someone's side, and that’s what Skye has become as Donna's trusted companion and in so many other ways, too.

Skye Helps Keep Donna Safe on Daily Walks

Skye helps Donna on her walks and keeps her from getting lost, which eases Michael’s concerns.

"I love to go for walks and so does Skye, obviously," Donna said. "My husband is fearful that I'm going to wander off and get lost, and that has never happened because Skye knows."

A Rescued Dog Returns the Love She Once Received

Perhaps that's one of the sweetest reminders tucked inside this story: love has a way of multiplying. A rescued dog became a cherished family member. That cherished family member became a faithful companion. And now, in one of life's hardest seasons, she's helping care for the woman who once cared for her.

Dogs may not speak our language, but they understand something many of us spend a lifetime learning—that showing up, staying close, and loving faithfully can be the greatest gifts we ever give.

"Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." Galatians 6:2
