A grieving mother turns her son’s memory into hope for families in need. While a photograph of Chandler Cook hangs on the wall at Chandler’s Hope Clothes Closet, volunteers around it sort shirts, find sizes, and welcome people trying to begin again.

In Fernandina Beach, Florida, Michele Holbrook carries her son’s memory into this work of caring for others.

Chandler was her only child, and tragically, on April 21, 2020, he died from a fentanyl and heroin overdose. But when Michele remembers him, she remembers his humor, his generosity, and the sad circumstances that the son she loved went through…a struggle he couldn’t overcome.

“He would’ve given the shirt off his back, even when he was on the drugs,” Michele said. “He just didn’t know how to fight it.”

Now, clothing given in his memory reaches people facing their own struggles.

Chandler’s Memory Becomes Hope for People Starting Over

Visitors choose what they want to wear. An outfit becomes something personal: a chance to walk into an interview feeling prepared, or to recognize a little of themselves after a difficult season. A man named Oliver came with a group from a Nassau County sober living program.

“When we hit our bottom, we’re hopeless. We don’t think there’s another day, another opportunity. No one’s gonna give us another chance,” Oliver said. “And then you come to a place like this where you have loving, caring individuals who just want to see you do better. Get that sense of hope.”

For Christian readers, that welcome offers a glimpse of the love Jesus calls us to practice, drawing close to people in their need and honoring their worth.

The Ministry Helps People Take Hopeful Steps Forward

Michele’s team also serves people preparing for life after incarceration through Operation New Hope in Jacksonville, Florida. Her husband, John, family, and volunteers help carry the work on hard days.

Then a message arrives. “When you receive a picture saying, ‘I got the job because of this outfit,’ that’s important,” Michele said.

There is room here for sorrow and gratitude together. Michele’s loss remains, while someone else receives help taking a hopeful step forward.

Children’s shoes and men’s dress pants are still needed. A donation may seem small. In another person’s hands, it becomes care they can receive and wear.
