A grieving passenger never forgot a flight attendant’s kindness, and four years later, they finally reunited. In 2022, Karoline Kinjorski boarded a last-minute flight from Seattle, Washington, to Detroit, Michigan, carrying the sudden news that her father had died.
There are trips you pack for. And then there are the ones you take because someone you love is gone, and somehow you have to get home.

Sitting with her boyfriend, Karoline tried to hold back tears, and she asked the crew for chamomile tea, reaching for something familiar on a day she could barely comprehend. The airline didn’t typically stock it on domestic flights. But about ten minutes later, flight attendant Melissa Sausaman appeared with a tea bag and a handwritten note.
“Ms. Kinjorski, we are so sorry to hear about your father,” it began. The crew offered to bring anything that might make the day less stressful, and Karoline was so touched that she began to cry.
The Flight Attendant Showed Her Kindness
Nobody on that plane could change what waited when she landed. But someone had noticed her hurting. Someone had taken the time to provide some sort of comfort on the worst day of her life.
“When you’re grieving, everything’s a blur, but you remember people who see you,” Karoline recalled.
One Small Act of Kindness Stays With Her for Years
The tea helped her sleep, and that precious note stayed tucked inside the book she had brought aboard. Karloline stated, “A cup of tea is like a cup of tea, but it’s not just a cup of tea,” before adding, “Little moments that don’t take a ton of time convey so much to the other person. Little acts of kindness can really just balloon into something a thousand times the size.”
Then, nearly four years later, she opened that book and found it again. She wanted the woman behind those words to know how much they had mattered; she wanted to find the woman who gave her that small bit of comfort.
Four Years Later, She Searches for the Flight Attendant
So Karoline shared her story online. After weeks of searching, Delta brought the women together at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport on September 14, and Melissa finally learned how far that small kindness had traveled.
“Little moments that don’t take a ton of time convey so much to the other person,” she said.
Their Reunion Shows How Far Simple Kindness Can Travel
What a tender reminder that we don’t need perfect words to love someone well. We can bring the tea, write the note, and make room for another person’s sorrow. God can use those ordinary offerings to bring comfort we may never know was needed or remember giving.
