Hero Goose Warns Family of Fire and Helps Save Animals
The family’s goose sounds the alarm during a fire and helps save barn animals. If you live out in the country as we do, you know barnyard animals come with their own personalities, routines, and opinions about nearly everything.
Our family has more than 30 chickens, and you learn their quirks. You know the normal clucking and squawking. You also learn to pay attention when one of them suddenly sounds different.
Goose Sounds the Alarm During Early-Morning Fire

Thank God Bert and Chelsea Gerber listened when their goose, Goosey, started making a noise they had never heard before. The Richmond, Texas, couple owns Chelsea’s Chickens, a hatchery that was home to roughly 100 chickens and turkeys when a fire broke out in their barn during the early morning hours of Aug. 3.
The family was asleep. But Goosey wasn’t about to let them stay that way. The goose began honking loudly enough to wake Bert, and the commotion was captured on the family’s security camera.
Family Wakes to Find Their Barn in Flames
“Living here with all these animals, you get used to certain noises that you don’t even pay attention to, but there was one that night that I hadn’t heard before,” Bert said.
That unusual honking made him get up and investigate. That was when he was utterly shocked at the sight of his barn. He discovered the barn was on fire.
Bert quickly grabbed a garden hose and began fighting the flames. The family believes old electrical wiring likely started the fire, and thankfully, their animals were saved.
Family Says They Were Incredibly Lucky
“We got really, really, really lucky — really lucky,” Chelsea said. Or perhaps there was a little providence tucked inside all that honking.
And Goosey almost wasn’t there. Just three months earlier, the Gerbers’ daughter, Elena, met Goosey at an expo and asked her parents if they could bring him home.
“How do you say no to that?” Chelsea said. Turns out, saying yes to their daughter may have helped save their entire flock.
Hero Goose Gets a Well-Deserved New Companion
Now Goosey is getting a well-earned promotion from family pet to feathered hero. And the Gerbers have decided their brave goose deserves a companion. They plan to get him a female feathered friend and name her Lucy.
Because sometimes God’s protection comes through firefighters, neighbors, or a perfectly timed warning. And sometimes it waddles around the barnyard, has feathers, and honks until somebody listens.
