64-Year-Old Navy Veteran Receives $174K in Support, 'God Works in Mysterious Ways'

A 64-year-old Navy Veteran receives $174K in support. ‘God works in mysterious ways.’ Sometimes the smallest moments ask the biggest question: Will you look away, or will you lean in? For LaCinda Thackeray, the answer came through an airplane window.
She was flying home to Utah from Southern California after attending a family funeral, carrying the quiet weight of grief. As she waited for takeoff at John Wayne Airport, one man walking across the tarmac caught her eye.

He wasn't asking for help; for him, it was just another workday, but you could tell by the way he walked that he was in pain and he was tired.
"I just saw somebody who needed a little bit of support and love and kindness," LaCinda said. "What really was hard for me was just the conditions he was in, and I didn't even know his story at that point."
Before her flight left the gate, she recorded a short video of the airport mechanic and posted it on TikTok with one simple hope.
"Immediately when I sat on the airplane, my thought was, if anybody knew who he was, could we get him retired?" she said. "I didn't know it was going to take off. I had no idea."
Within hours, more than a million people had watched the video because so many of us pass elderly workers every day at grocery stores and gas stations, and we wonder what their story is and how we might help.

Soon, the internet identified the man as James Blair, a 64-year-old Navy veteran and fuel mechanic who had spent decades serving others. James had faithfully worked on aircraft for years, but retirement wasn't an option. His knees were failing, yet he continued working because much of his income helped pay for the hospice care of his elderly mother.
"My plan was to work until I can't work, until I physically can't work," James said. And yet, his story touched hearts around the world. People who had never met James began donating. A GoFundMe campaign quickly gained momentum as thousands of strangers gave what they could, believing one hardworking man deserved to rest after a lifetime of service.
"I was speechless because I felt like the world showed up," LaCinda said. "I think in these times we need people like that."
There were unexpected challenges along the way. James didn't even own a smartphone or use social media, so his boss drove nearly 90 minutes to help him create an account to receive donations.
Unexpected Kindness Renews His Faith in God
Then came the moment neither of them would ever forget. LaCinda flew back to California to personally hand James a check for $174,000.
Yet, James was overcome with humility and struggled to understand why strangers would sacrifice their own money to help someone they had never met.
"When they're giving money they really can't spare, that amazes me," James said. "I'm just blown away."
But perhaps the greatest gift wasn't measured in dollars. It was hope renewed through the kindness of thousands of strangers that ignited something deep within James' heart.
"I believed in God, but I didn't really believe in God," he told LaCinda. "But now, with the angel sitting next to you, it's amazing. I can't believe how God works in mysterious ways."

James is still going to work for now, though he recently used some of the money to buy himself a bed, and he’s using the funds to take care of his mama.
What began as a grieving woman glancing out an airplane window became a reminder that God often invites ordinary people to answer extraordinary prayers. One moment of noticing became millions of views. One act of compassion became a worldwide movement. And one faithful servant discovered he had never been as alone as he thought. Sometimes the miracle isn't that one person changes the world.
"Let us not grow weary of doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." Galatians 6:9
