He Saw His Neighbor Trapped by a House Fire, and Rushed In Without Even Stopping for Shoes

He saw his neighbor trapped in a house fire and rushed in without even stopping to put on his shoes. Clint Schneider didn’t know what he would find inside his neighbor’s home. He knew she had limited mobility, and he could see flames shooting from a window. So he ran.

Teacher Spots His Neighbor’s House on Fire

It was a little after 10 p.m. on September 18 in Washington, Missouri. Clint, a social studies teacher at Washington High School, had glanced out his daughter’s window when he spotted the fire next door. He knew his neighbor might need help getting out, and there was no time to spare.

Clint reached her house barefoot. He broke a window with a rock and climbed inside, stepping across the glass he had just shattered. Only then did the thought of shoes occur to him. He later laughed at himself for leaving them behind, but by that point, he was already moving toward his neighbor.

Smoke and Flames Make the Rescue Even More Dangerous

Smoke made it difficult to see. Fire lit the living room from the floor to the ceiling, climbing the walls. Clint had no flashlight and didn’t know where the light switches were. He called out, searching for an answer. Then, through the glow of the flames, he saw her hands waving.

They grabbed each other’s arms and started toward the exit. She couldn’t move quickly enough, so Clint wrapped her in a bear hug, lifted her, and carried her out. By the time firefighters arrived, she was safe.

Assistant Fire Chief Mark Skornia said a few more minutes could have made the fire deadly. He called Clint a “genuine bona fide hero.”

Clint sees it differently. “I don’t think of myself as a hero,” he said. He believes he did what anyone would do for a neighbor.

His Rescue Shows What Loving a Neighbor Can Look Like

I hope he’s right. I hope we would notice the light in a neighbor’s window, remember who lives behind it, and run when they need us. That night, Clint’s love for his neighbor was more than a kind thought. It carried her out of the fire.
