Toddler Receives Life-Saving Kidney From Cousin in Powerful Story of Love and Loss

A toddler receives a life-saving kidney from a cousin in a powerful story of love and loss, and somehow, in the space where one family was saying goodbye, God was making a way for another family to hold on.

John Miller was only a baby when his mom, Greer Miller, knew something wasn't right. He slept too much and wasn't gaining weight. When doctors discovered his kidneys were failing, Greer crumpled. Her worst fears as a mom were more than she could bear.

Toddler Battles Stage 5 Kidney Disease

“I dropped to my knees in absolute shock and disbelief,” she said. I was terrified. I felt in that moment that I had absolutely failed my child, because we knew about the hydronephrosis. But we were told not to worry about it.”

Before this dreaded moment, John spent much of his first years in and out of hospitals. He had been hospitalized more than nine times. But by June of 2025, his kidney disease had progressed to stage 5. He desperately needed a transplant, but his little body had to grow big enough to receive an adult kidney, which meant he needed to gain more weight.

As time seemed to slip through his mama’s fingers, she prayed he would grow big enough, soon enough to get the life-saving help. Finally, at 22 pounds, John was ready. During that time, his family searched desperately for a donor while strangers volunteered, friends shared his story to spread the word, and his parents waited and prayed for the right match to come along.

Toddler Receives Kidney Transplant From Family Member

Then came news no family wants to receive. One of their family member’s had died. John's father's cousin, 37-year-old Lance Miller, had been killed in a motorcycle accident. Lance was a husband, a father and, as Greer described him, “a man of God.”

He was also an organ donor. And in the unbearable ache of losing Lance came the news that his kidney was a near-perfect match for little John. She was at a loss for words about how to describe this incredibly heartbreaking moment and gift. “We are so grateful and also heartbroken at the same time,” Greer said.

Those words hold the weight of this story. Because sometimes joy and grief occupy the same room. This precious family was mourning a man they desperately wanted back while they watched his gift give John a future.

Lance ultimately saved five lives through organ donation. And on June 3, John received his cousin's kidney. Almost immediately, the little boy who had spent so much of his life sick began staying awake longer and playing with his big sister.

One Final Gift Carries a Legacy of Love

“He is doing things we never thought he would do,” Greer said. One day, when John is old enough to hear about Lance, he'll learn about the cousin who loved God and whose final gift keeps working quietly inside his small body.

Perhaps the most tender words came from Lance's widow. She said lovingly, “I want to get my hands on that baby because Lance is in there!”

God did not spare this family from grief. But He was there in the middle of it, where heartbreak and hope somehow learned to beat together.

“It’s a great honor for John to carry on a piece of Lance’s legacy,” John's father, Kris, said.
