Generous Woman Gives Back to Teachers With $1 Million in Surprise Bonuses

A generous woman gives back to teachers with $1 million in surprise bonuses. At a time when teachers across the country are walking away from classrooms exhausted, underpaid, and often spending their own money to give students what they need, one California woman decided gratitude needed to become something tangible.
And she wrote a $1 million check.

One hundred teachers in California’s Ross Valley School District walked into what they thought was an ordinary staff meeting. Instead, local resident Maja Kristin stood before them while principals handed each teacher an envelope.
Inside was a check for $9,161.70.
What led up to this momentum gift was that Kristin had learned something that didn’t sit right with her. Ross Valley sits in Marin County, one of the wealthiest counties in the country, yet the school district ranks in the bottom 4% for funding in California. Its teachers are also among the lowest paid in Marin County.
Generous Gift Helps Teachers Support Their Own Families
So she did more than shake her head at the unfairness of it. She gave in a way that will forever touch these teachers' lives. “It’s life-changing,” teacher Sydney Dean said.
For Amber Bunnell-Wild, the gift carried another kind of weight. “I don’t think I’ve ever experienced such a beautiful gift from someone I don’t even know or haven’t taught their kid,” she said.
Perhaps that is what makes this story hit so deeply. Kristin wasn’t thanking a favorite teacher. These educators hadn’t taught her children. She simply saw a need and decided it mattered.
For teacher Anna Schnell, a mother of three, the money meant something beautifully ordinary: getting to say yes to her own children.
“There’s lots of activities that they want to do that we can’t always afford to pay for because of my salary,” she said. Now, she explained, there are things she will finally be able to say yes to.
Woman Hopes Her Kindness Inspires Others to Give
Kristin hopes her gift becomes bigger than the checks themselves. She hopes others will see teachers' needs and step forward, too.
Because sometimes God reminds people they matter through an answered prayer. Sometimes through an unexpected kindness. And sometimes His provision arrives tucked inside an envelope handed to a teacher who has spent years pouring herself out for everyone else.
