From a DNA Match, a Woman Meets Her Biological Father For the First Time

Grab a tissue and watch how, from a DNA match, a woman meets her biological father for the first time. There are moments in life when the ache you’ve carried for decades finally exhales. For 35-year-old Sarah Pilkington, that moment came wrapped in a simple notification on her phone: 'Your DNA results are ready.'

For most of her life, Sarah longed for a father she had never known. A man who could have taught her how to steady her bike on a gravel road, how to plant tomatoes in straight rows, how to unravel the knots of fifth-grade math, and how to hold her close for a daddy-daughter dance on her wedding day. She says she always felt the quiet emptiness of that absence—a missing piece she could never quite name.

Life Moved Forward Without Knowing Who Her Father Was

After her mother became pregnant at 20, paternity was never confirmed. Life moved forward, and her mother raised Sarah and later a stepfather she never truly connected with. Though she cherished her bond with her mom, she often felt—as she says—“like a large part of my identity was missing.”

And yet, even in the pages that felt torn, God was already writing a story that would one day make her whole.

In August 2025, after years of believing she might be a burden, Sarah did something brave. “Up until this point, I was always so afraid of being rejected by whoever my father was,” she shared. “But I finally felt like I had the support to go look for him—and handle however it played out.”

She Ordered a DNA Test

With the sun warming her shoulders and a surprising peace settling over her, she ordered an ancestry test.

Three weeks later, everything changed.

“I got an immediate close family member match, and it happened to be my aunt,” she said. Her sister looked up the woman on Facebook and sent photos—one of a man with deep brown eyes, eyes Sarah immediately recognized in herself. “And…I just knew.”

Sarah, A Woman Without Her Dad, Gets to Meet Her Biological Father

Despite having been off Facebook for years, Sarah reactivated her account and messaged the woman. Her aunt responded right away, open, kind, and eager to help. Within days, while Sarah was out of state for a wedding, she got on the phone and heard the voice she had wondered about her entire life.

Her father’s. Greg Mickles, 55.

“My dad and I spoke on the phone almost daily once we connected,” she said. “It just felt…natural.”

Then in October, Greg and his wife flew from Wildomar, California, to Seattle, then drove to Vancouver, Washington, to meet Sarah face-to-face.

She Has Her Dad Now

Sarah describes feeling numb, bracing for every possible emotion, until the moment she opened the door.

“I had my dad,” she said. “He cried, I cried. We all cried. He is honestly such a kind person.”

The tenderness between them settled quickly, like long-lost puzzle pieces clicking into place.

“My dad is just like me—or I’m like him. We’re both tender hearts, big softies. He is better than I hoped for,” she said.

She is Looking Ahead

What astonished Sarah most wasn’t simply finding him, it was how effortlessly everything unfolded…as if the door God opened had been waiting on its hinges all along.

“I have heard of these searches not going anywhere near as smoothly as this did,” she recalled. “I did not think I would find him this fast or that it would be this easy. Some of that self-esteem comes into play—not really believing he would want anything to do with me. Boy, was I wrong.”

Now, Sarah is looking ahead with a heart finally at rest. Holiday plans. Long conversations. Reclaiming years she once thought were lost. “I feel a level of peace I cannot quite describe,” she says.

The Search Might Just Be Worth It

And for anyone afraid to begin their own search, Sarah offers this encouragement: “My family, friends, and partner helped me feel safe enough to take this step. Without that support, it would’ve taken me much longer.”

Sometimes God slips miracles into the most ordinary places—a test kit, a Facebook message, a phone call—until suddenly the missing piece doesn’t feel missing anymore.

Sometimes the door you’ve been afraid to knock on swings wide open, and the father you’ve always longed for is standing right there…with tears in his eyes, arms ready, heart already yours.

Psalm 147:3 “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
