10 Reasons to Implement Watermelon into Your Diet this Summer

Watermelon is a summer favorite for most families across the globe. My grandma loved watermelon so much that she was known to eat an entire watermelon in one sitting. Watermelon brings us back to when we were children, playing outside on the Fourth of July. We would have seed-spitting contests and hold up the watermelon rinds to form a smile. We were not weighed down by the anxieties and worries of adulthood.

We were allowed to be free and to have fun. Allow yourself to be brought back to these memories. Just because these days have passed does not mean they cannot be lived again. It could be that watermelons will bring back these happy memories again. Allow the smiles and joy to return to your heart again. After all, watermelons have always meant a fun time is just around the corner.

Watermelons are not only fun, but they are also incredibly good for you. To reap the benefits of watermelon, it is important to start implementing it into your diet. Even if you have not been a fan of watermelon in the past, give it another chance. Watermelon brings joy, laughter, and refreshment to your long summer days.

Here are 10 reasons to implement watermelon in your diet this summer.

1. Hydration

Picking a Watermelon

Watermelons are 92 percent water. This means they are an excellent source of hydration. Everyone needs at least 8 cups of water each day. Implementing watermelon into your diet can help you reach these 8 cups.

Getting enough hydration is particularly important in the summer, as sweating increases fluid loss. Whenever you are active, doing yard work, or going for a run, your body naturally sweats to cool itself off. To replenish your natural water balance, ensure you get enough hydration in your diet. Start incorporating watermelon into your meal plans a few times a week to reap its benefits.

2. Keeps You Cool

Eating Watermelon

Chilled watermelon will keep you cool. Bring out an ice chest with frozen watermelon slices to keep the entire family cool for the rest of the summer. Whether you are going hiking, swimming, or cycling, keep some watermelon stored with you. Whenever you need a quick pick-me-up, pull out your watermelon and enjoy a sweet treat. The summer months are known to be incredibly warm; therefore, do what you can to stay cool.

3. Healthy and Delicious

Watermelon Cut

A ⅔ cup serving of watermelon contains 30 calories. This means it is an extremely healthy fruit for you to enjoy over the summer months. Rather than reaching for an ice-cream cone, reach for a serving of watermelon. Watermelon will help you meet any health-related goals this summer. If you are trying to lose weight this summer or simply want to start eating healthier, incorporating watermelon into your diet is a great place to start.

4. Packed with Antioxidants

Antioxidants help keep us healthy, fit, and well. Watermelons are packed with antioxidants, such as lycopene, vitamin C, beta-carotene, and cucurbitacin E. Theseantioxidants help protect us from heart disease, chronic illness, and cancer. They also cultivate a healthy immune system. With these types of benefits, there is no reason not to incorporate watermelon into your diet.

What we eat does affect us. If we are only eating prepackaged foods, it will show up in our health later in life. To save us this headache, let's start including watermelon a few times a week in our diet this summer. It would also be beneficial to keep watermelon in your fridge year-round if your local grocers have it readily available.

5. Anti-inflammatory Properties

Watermelon

In addition to being packed with antioxidants, watermelon also contains anti-inflammatory properties. Anti-inflammatory foods help protect our health and boost our immune system. Chronic inflammation can leave us feeling sluggish, sick, and worn out. Whenever we feel this way, we need to switch up our diet. Summer is an exciting time for a clean start!

Give watermelon a month. Take note of the health benefits over the course of the month. How is your energy? Have you gotten sick? Do you feel lighter? Each of these things would point to less inflammation in your body.

Due to living in a stressed and overworked society, it is not surprising that many of us struggle with chronic inflammation. Make the choice today to help yourself by snacking on watermelon this summer rather than prepackaged snacks. Watermelon will help you to feel rejuvenated and energized, while prepackaged foods will make you feel tired and anxious.

6. Promotes Skin Health

Since watermelon contains antioxidants, regular consumption of this delicious red fruit promotes skin health. There are many skin care routines and products advertised to us daily, but nothing matches watermelon. Skin lotions and anti-aging creams have taken enough of your money over the years. Choose to go the natural route and embrace the health benefits of watermelon. Watermelon will help your skin regain elasticity and promote proper repair within skin cells.

Rather than paying out more money for elixirs, creams, and lotions, give watermelon a try. Try eating watermelon 1-2 times a day for a few months and see how your skin looks. It may be that you no longer need any expensive lotions or creams. Your skin will look full of life and more hydrated than ever before. Keep reaping the benefits of watermelon year-round by freezing it. In this way, you will be able to ensure your skin stays healthy year-round.

Loving body; healthy; heart

Watermelon has also been shown to lower blood pressure. Chronic stress, anxiety, and lack of sleep will cause our blood pressure to rise. Incorporating watermelon into our diet will ensure our hearts are happy and healthy. Cardiovascular health is extremely important to our overall well-being. Since it is thenumber one killer in America, we need to ensure we are taking the proper steps to keep our hearts healthy.

In addition to eating watermelon, it is also beneficial to exercise daily, reduce sodium intake, and consume a Mediterranean diet. These additional steps will ensure your heart is healthy for many fun summers to come. Pass down your love for watermelon and its health benefits to your children, and they will pass it down to their children.

8. Easy on the Stomach

Compared to other fiber-rich fruits, watermelon is easier on the stomach. In fact, it is encouraged for those who struggle withautoimmune diseases, such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, to consume watermelon when it is in season. Since watermelon is easier on the stomach, it can be a great snack for kids in between swims or before you head out to meet your friends. Watermelons provide enough nutrition to keep you going without making you feel bloated.

Feeling bloated during the summer months is never ideal. Summer is the time when we want to feel our best. Sticking with watermelon will ensure we stay healthy and light. Rather than upsetting our stomach or making them physically distend, watermelon will ease our stomachs.

9. Versatile

Watermelon Salad

Chill watermelon, eat at room temperature, or turn it into a fun recipe! There are many unique ways to enjoy watermelon. This is because it is a versatile fruit. You can make watermelon pops or watermelon soup with a single watermelon. Adding diced watermelon into your salad or blending watermelon with other fruits for a summertime smoothie are also great ideas. The possibilities are truly endless for this summertime fruit!

Watermelon can be for breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, or a snack. You can keep watermelon plain, or add a pinch of salt to bring out its flavor. While you need to be careful with salt if you are on a low-sodium diet, many people enjoy putting a pinch of salt on their watermelon slices. Give it a try this summer and see if it is the perfect mid-day snack for your busy summer.

10. Adds Color to Your Meals

The average American diet only has one or two colors. What colors are you currently eating? How do these colors make you feel? Only eating one or two colored foods will begin to grow boring over time. This is why it is important to add more color to your meals.

Watermelon brings the color red to the table. This gives an instant pop to the meal. Think about adding other colorful fruits and vegetables. It will bring a smile to your face and health to your heart. Your kids might be more likely to eat colorful items because they remind them of the color of a rose or your family's car.

Eating a variety of colorful foods will also help with mental health issues. With a variety of colors and healthy choices, you'll feel better about your food decisions. This alone can do wonders for mental health struggles.

What are you waiting for? Start incorporating watermelon into your summer plans this year!
