5 Prayers for Alleviating Physical Pain

Physical pain is something that we have all experienced at some point or another. We can never run from it, especially if we recently sustained an injury or if we are battling a chronic illness. As I'm writing today, I have a shin splint that has been bothering me for a few days. The pain from it can range from subtle to excruciating. I have been taking the steps I can to help it heal, such as icing it and applying kinesiology tape; however, I know I still have to give it time.
The sad reality is that I have never stopped to pray over my injury. I have prayed over injuries and pain before; however, this time around, I never even thought to pray. I think this is something we all need to change in our lives: we need to take time to pray over every situation. James tells us, “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective” (James 5:16).
We should pray for others to be healed, and we should also pray for the Lord to help us. It is not selfish or unreasonable to think that God cannot heal us. God can do all things, and He can help speed up the healing of injuries and alleviate physical pain. Although He might not completely heal us, there is no reason to believe that He wants us to remain in a painful situation and endure agony every day, because that goes against His character. God loves us, and He doesn't desire to see us in excruciating pain.

1. A Prayer for Rest
Something that I find hard to do when I'm in pain is to rest. Despite the physical pain I'm in, I don't take time off from work, from my daily chores, or from my daily life. I think this is due to the way I was raised, as it is impossible for me not to be doing something. I could be having intense pain, and nobody would ever know because I have learned how to hide it and seem as though I'm doing just fine. Maybe you are the same way, and it is hard for you to share that you are struggling with pain, and it is even harder to give yourself permission to rest.
This is why we need to bring our prayers before the Lord. We need to ask Him to help us rest from our work, as this is the only way for the pain to heal. Whether we are having pain from a sports injury or from a chronic illness, we need to take time to rest and to recover. We don't need to feel guilty for doing what we need to help our bodies heal the way God made them to. Our bodies are always on our side, and we need to ensure we rest to support their healing.
“Dear God, please help me to take time to rest. It can be hard to rest even if I'm in physical pain. Logically, I know it is important to rest after I've been injured or sick, but it is hard not to keep doing my daily activities. I need Your help to rest and experience Your peace. Give my soul the rest, solace, and serenity that it needs. I give You all the praise, God, Amen.”
2. A Prayer to Trust
Another struggle that often prevents me from turning to God in prayer is that I don't believe He will fully answer my prayers. This is something I have struggled with for a long time, as I don't see myself as worthy of God’s goodness. Since I don't see myself in this way, I figure that God isn't going to heal me, and there is no point in having a false sense of security. If you also feel this way, know that it is because we need to change our perspectives.
God does care about us, and He can help us experience healing (1 Peter 5:7). He hears every one of our prayers, and He will answer them in His own timing. Choose not to give in to doubt and choose to trust in Him. As the Bible says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6).
“Dear God, I apologize for struggling to trust You with my prayers. It's just because I have seen my prayers return to me with a “no” so many times. Please help me rebuild trust in Your goodness. Help me to overcome my doubt and trust that You can bring healing into my life. In Your Son’s Name, I pray, Amen.”
3. A Prayer to Be Kind to Ourselves
Whenever we are in need of healing from physical pain, we can often be hard on ourselves. We feel like we shouldn't be so “weak” as the pain is interfering with our daily lives. Rather than seeing ourselves as “weak,” we need to be kind to ourselves and give ourselves grace. We don't need to be mean to ourselves. Truth be told, we are already in physical pain; we don't need to make matters worse.
Being kind to ourselves can be hard, but it will be worth it. Ask the Lord to help you be kinder to yourself rather than beating yourself to the ground. You cannot help the pain you are in today; therefore, stop blaming yourself. Whether you sustained a sports injury, a chronic illness, or you have pain from a virus, stop the cycle of blaming yourself. God can help you be kind to yourself and stop making things worse.
“Dear Jesus, please help me to be kind to myself while I'm in pain. Sometimes the pain is so bad that I blame myself. I will go through all the reasons why I shouldn't be having a tough time right now. Maybe if I hadn't been biking or running, I wouldn't have sustained this injury. Or maybe if I had done a better job of protecting myself from germs, I wouldn't have this virus right now. Please help me stop this cycle and help me be kind to myself. Thank You, Lord, Amen.”

4. A Prayer for Help from Others
Whenever we are in pain, it can be hard to ask others for help. Rather than asking others, we want to try to manage everything ourselves. This is a bad tactic, as we will only continue to struggle with asking for help when we experience pain in the future. Whenever we are in pain, we need to be okay with asking others for help.
Getting help from others is a good thing. It is nothing to be ashamed of. All of us need help sometimes, especially when we are in pain. Go to the Lord today and ask Him to help you accept help from others. Reach out to a loved one today and ask them for their help. Maybe they will be able to keep you company as your injury is healing, or take you to the doctor.
“Dear Jesus, I have a tough time asking and accepting help from others. I think this is due to my pride. Please help me be okay with asking others for help, and help me accept their help. I don't want to be a difficult person. I give You all the praise and glory, Lord, Amen.”
5. A Prayer for Hope
The Bible tells us, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13). God is the God of all hope, and He will fill us with joy and peace as we trust in Him. When we are in pain, we definitely need hope. We don't need to run on hopelessness; we will burn out.
Ask the Lord to help you remain hopeful as you heal. Pray for Him to help you see hope when you are in intense pain. God will equip your heart and mind to know that better days lie ahead. Give God praise and glory for all of the hope He is filling your heart with today. May His hope stay within you far beyond the recovery journey.
“Dear God, please give me hope. There are days when I feel overwhelmed with dread because of my pain. I question if this pain is ever going to go away. Please help me know that there is hope and brighter days ahead. Thank You for being with me, God, and for giving me hope for the future. In Your Son’s Name I pray, Amen.”
