Safe Stem Cells Aren’t Worth Celebrating?

The Obama administration has got its come-uppance on embryonic stem cell research. It successfully rolled back bush administration prohibition against the procedure, but wait. The New York Times reports that scientists have found a way to produce apparently safe, efficient and effective stem cells without using aborted or frozen embryos.

Under normal conditions, this would be hailed as a breakthrough. Stem cells from sources other than dead babies would - or should - satisfy everyone along the pro-choice, pro-life divide. But the pro-choicers view the destruction of human life the way ancient societies viewed child sacrifice. For them, it is as close as they can get to a religious rite.

Pro-lifers, led by the 16,000-member Christian medical Association, should continue to press their case. They might very well have a majority of the country on their side.
