What Persecution Is – and Isn’t

January 6, 2011
Have you heard about the massacre of Coptic Christians in Egypt? What about the attacks by Muslim fanatics on Christians, their churches and schools in Pakistan? Have you heard about those? Do you care?
It is easier to be a Christian in America than almost any other place in the world. Here, we think persecution consists of a bad editorial in the New York Times. In other countries your faith can deprive you of your liberty, or your life.
When Jews were being persecuted in the old Soviet Union, Jews and Christians rose up in support of them, forcing the government to allow many to immigrate to Israel. Where are the cries of outrage and support for the persecuted Christians in Egypt and Pakistan? The Obama administration has been publicly silent except for the pro-forma denunciation. The very least we can do is pray for our brothers and sisters. And we should also act to protest their treatment, even though the one we follow said, "In the world you will have tribulation."
