1 Kings 19:4-5

“But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he asked that he might die, saying, ‘It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers.’ And he lay down and slept under a broom tree. And behold, an angel touched him and said to him, ‘Arise and eat.’”

Get up and eat!

Elijah was going through a tough time. He was scared of what Jezebel might do to him. He was exhausted. He was at the end of himself. Some people might call him depressed or suicidal.

In his state of isolation, fear, and exhaustion, Elijah feels like giving up and asks God to allow him to die.

Not only does God not kill Elijah, he actually provides him with sustenance—food and drink. How gracious is God! I am encouraged that when he finds us in our fears, he speaks to us not with threats of retribution but with reminders of his care and concern.

What are you afraid of? Maybe it’s time to get up and eat. We do not live by bread alone but by every word the comes from God’s mouth (Matthew 4:4).

Get up and see what God says in his word about the thing you are fearful of. And let his word fuel in you faith and peace which surpasses all understanding.
