5 Peaceful Prayers to End Your Day with God

As night comes, many of us are ready to wrap the covers around us and drift to sleep. Our days were hectic with stressful tasks, and the responsibilities of the next day hang heavy over us. The Lord knows we are tired – He created us for rhythms of work and rest – and He understands the times when we drift out of consciousness as we mumble a few words in prayer during bedtime.
What He also knows is that we need time with Him throughout the day. We need the reminder of what our life should be focused on and what is truly important: the Lord and our relationship with Him.
Prayer is the best way to wind down from the exhausting busyness of the day and find peace before we lay down to sleep. Talking to God not only allows us an opportunity to express our concerns and fears to Him, but also intentionally repositions our focus on Him. Through the act of prayer, we are participating with all the saints in the practice of reminding ourselves that we do not live by our own strength or decision.
Our lives come from and are sustained by God, and He is the reason we can sleep in safety and peace despite our circumstances. We are spiritually recharged through conversations with our Savior.
So, during our bedtime routines, let us carve out a space to be present with the Lord and pray to Him. We might still find ourselves becoming drowsy and falling to sleep while talking to Him. But peace and hope will be much more present in our lives because we will be turning our thoughts back to the One for whom we were made.

1. Praise for the Lord of Our Days

1. Praise for the Lord of Our Days
SLIDE 1 OF 5
Praying involves more than merely requesting things from God. Biblically, a vital part of prayer is worship. We find this exemplified throughout the Psalms. Interwoven into the petitions and outpouring of emotions from the psalmists is praise for the Lord, even during times of distress (e.g., Psalms 32, 42, and 43). There is a reason the book of Psalms has historically been used by believers as a prayer and worship book, and we can learn from these written expressions by incorporating praise into our prayers.
As the Lord of all our days, He is worthy of honor and glory. We might not always feel ready to worship as we prepare for bed, but there is much for which we should praise the Lord. He is the reason we have eternal life and a hope that can never be thwarted. Only because of Him can we sleep and awaken again, trusting that each breath comes from Him.
Lord,
You are the God of the golden days when everything appears brighter and brimming with promise. You are also the God of the gloomy days, the ones in which my soul feels heavy, and I struggle to move under the shroud of sorrow and discontentment.
No matter what I go through, whether sunlit meadows or dark valleys, You are with me. Jesus, my Good Shepherd, You are all I need. How great are Your works and widespread Your grace. May the praise of my lips be pleasing to You as I add my voice to the roar of all the saints: holy is the Lamb and most worthy of praise.
Amen.

2. A Prayer of Gratitude

2. A Prayer of Gratitude
SLIDE 2 OF 5
A quick way to change your perspective at the end of the day is to list things for which you are thankful. These items do not have to be major acts, either. Sometimes what best ministers to us in situations are the small, overlooked blessings – like the blushing sunset after a long day of work, the hug from a child, a comforting meal, or kind words spoken by a friend. Such little aspects of our day, yet they are overflowing with the love of our Creator.
And even if we struggle to think of a positive part of our day, we can always turn our thoughts back to the aspects of life we take for granted: A roof over our heads, fresh water to drink and to use for washing, warm food, a car. Many people in the world do not have access to these vital parts of life, and we should give thanks for such provision.
Most of all, we have the greatest gift, an eternal relationship with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Nothing in life compares with knowing, and being known by, Him.
Lord God,
Your Word tells me to give thanks in every circumstance, but I often struggle to apply this truth into my life. Too often, my focus is on everything that is going wrong, and I overlook everyday blessings, including the love You show through ordinary acts and events. Forgive me for the times I am ungrateful to You, Lord.
You have given me riches beyond measure by saving me from my sin and making me Your child. Take these embers of decreasing enthusiasm and fan them into flame so that I am reminded once again how wonderful it is to know the living God and be known by Him. Help me better cultivate the holy discipline of gratitude in my life, finding joy in everyday provision and small blessings, for a believer has more to be thankful for than anyone else in the world.
(After a pause, include things for which you are grateful).
Thank you, Lord. In Your Son’s name, I pray,
Amen.

3. Asking for God’s Provision in the Night and Next Day

SLIDE 3 OF 5
Many of us fall quickly into a worried mindset as soon as our head hits the pillow at night. We start to think of the tasks that need to be accomplished, the loved ones we are worried about, and the fear that we will not be able to sleep (which ironically continues the cycle of restless nights).
Our difficulty in finding rest reflects the lack of peace within our lives. What we need is more time with the Prince of Peace, casting our worries on Him so we can sleep without a flood of thoughts overwhelming us (1 Peter 5:7). Entrusting ourselves to God for the night and the coming day can bring us peace.
Therefore, we should make prayer a part of our nightly rhythm before bed, alongside tasks like brushing our teeth or reading a story. Talking to God will then become an integral part of our routine as we wind down in anticipation for sleep. We can trust that no matter how we are feeling, or what we tell the Lord, He will always be with us, listen to our requests, and care for us.
Father,
You placed the stars into the sky and call each one by name, an innumerable amount that is beyond my comprehension. Yet the Bible tells me You love me and care about my concerns, though I am not as majestic as the heavenly bodies nor as vital to the workings of the universe. How amazing it is that You listen to my pleas and worries.
I entrust my concerns to You now, knowing that the One who holds the stars, planets, and moon is the One who sustains me while I sleep. You are the God of my future, so I trust You will be with me no matter what happens. Change the direction of my thoughts so that they are turned upward instead of inward and draw me closer to You.
Amen.

4. A Prayer for Renewed Focus

4. A Prayer for Renewed Focus
SLIDE 4 OF 5
At times, life can seem like an endless string of to-do lists and repeating loops of the same schedule. We can feel as if we are walking in a rut of our own making, unable to see any new path except the one we have worn down. During these seasons of mundane tasks, we can lose perspective of our lives and purpose. Priorities can also become misaligned and focused only on the next few steps ahead.
Pausing to consider what is beyond the walls of our busy days can shift our perspective. For what we choose to do within these seasons of life has eternal impact. We might not see it now or even within our lifetime, but our actions have the ability to impact those around us and to leave lasting impressions.
If something as simple as a cup of water given to someone in need has eternal significance, then surely our ordinary days are important too (Matthew 10:42). It comes down to what we choose to do with our time, opportunities, and relationships (Ephesians 5:15-16).
Each night, we can pray not only for provision and intercession, but we can also allow our communion with God to renew our vision of life. Working each day for the glory of God can transform the lowliest tasks into grace-filled acts that ripple out into eternity.
Lord,
My perspective is often limited. I am like a horse with blinders, focused only on what lies ahead. I sometimes go through life on mere reflex, not stopping to consider how I might reach out to someone hurting or give a cup of water in Your name. Frustrations grow within me and all I see are the walls of my schedules and routines, stuck in the rut of my limitations.
This night and the ones forward, I pray You would renew my vision and make it more aligned to Yours. May I grow through my communion with You, being transformed by Your love and companionship. In Your name, Jesus, I pray.
Amen.

5. Benediction

5. Benediction
SLIDE 5 OF 5
Some parents have adopted the practice of speaking a blessing or benediction over their children during bedtime. This practice has ancient spiritual roots in the Old Testament when fathers pronounced a blessing over individual children, or priests declared a benediction over the nation, such as Jacob’s blessing of Joseph’s sons (Genesis 48:9-20) or Aaron’s blessing over Israel (Numbers 6:22-27).
Many of the New Testament epistles likewise ended with a benediction, pronouncing a blessing over followers of Christ. This practice has endured to the modern day, as many churches end their services each week with a declaration of a blessing over the congregation.
Believers can choose whether to make this a routine bedtime practice for children. However, they should also consider if they need the words of Scripture spoken over their lives. We outgrow the practice of parents tucking us in for sleep, but we never outgrow the need for God’s blessing in our lives.
A few prayers to consider using as a benediction at bedtime include the Aaronic blessing in Numbers 6:24-26 and the conclusion of Hebrews (13:20-21), or shorter declarations such as the one found in Romans 15:13. Blessings used throughout history, such as the Irish blessing or a benediction by St. Augustine, are also adaptable and accessible to life today.
May the Good Shepherd of our souls guide us in the coming day, preparing us for the good works for which we were created. Let His love be the light we walk in, and His care be the shelter in which we rest. In all things, may we look toward that great day when all things will be restored, and speed its coming.
Amen.
