We need to pray for everyone involved in youth sports, not just athletes and parents. May God lead us to always be grateful and collaborative with those who are in leadership positions.
Lord, we know that it’s not an easy job to be a coach, referee or umpire. We applaud those who use their time and skills to bless young people in their athletic pursuits. May the Holy Spirit remind us that we are disciples of Christ when we are engaging with these individuals, especially when emotions run high. Please help us and our children remember that we are to treat these individuals with dignity and respect. And may we show gratitude in a myriad of ways for all that they do to teach and support these athletes.
You can also pray specific Bible verses with your children that use athletics as a metaphor:
“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize” (1 Corinthians 9:24-27). Remind your children that Paul used these metaphors to talk about spiritual endurance and self-control.
“Similarly, anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the victor’s crown except by competing according to the rules” (2 Timothy 2:5). Again, Paul is speaking of following Christ and His commandments.
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:1-2). Of course, the writer is speaking of running the race of life that God has given us, but it is a great reminder that even if we are running a literal race, we need to fix our eyes on Jesus, giving Him all of the glory for what He enables us to do.
Whatever sport(s) your child(ren) play, it’s amazing how the Lord will direct your thoughts and emotions when you fix your eyes on Jesus. We pray that these prayers will help you do just that and will bless you and your children on and off the field.
