8 Fun Things Grandparents Can Include in Letters to Their Grandkids

With today’s technology, grandparents are staying connected to their grandkids through FaceTime, texting, emailing, and more. But what about old-fashioned snail mail? I can’t think of any child who wouldn’t love receiving fun letters in their mailbox.

Imagine them opening the envelope to find personalized touches such as stickers, printables, and other unique things. If you want to connect in creative ways, here are eight fun things to include in letters to your grandkids.

1. Custom-Made Stickers

Stickers are fun no matter what age or stage, but custom-made stickers add an even more personalized touch. These can include their name, favorite pet, a piece of artwork, or photos. The options are endless!

With a bit of creativity, you can design a sticker on Canva (or a similar platform) and upload it to sites like Sticker Mule or Make Stickers. And if you’re really crafty, use markers or colored pencils to draw pictures or messages on blank adhesive labels. Cut them out and slip them into your letters as an inexpensive option.

Here are a few encouraging phrases to add to their sticker collection:

Jesus loves you and so do I!”

“We love because He first loved us.”

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart.”

“Give thanks to the Lord for He is good!”

2. Printed Games or Mazes

When I’m with my grandkids, we love to play tic-tac-toe or solving mazes. I have a collection of workbooks with various games and challenges according to their age range. When we’re not together, I like to print fun games from free sites like this one. The best part is I can hunt for age-appropriate printables for all my grandkids to enjoy.

According to the postal service, you’re allowed to send up to four pages for one stamp. This is more cost-effective than sending coloring books or puzzle books, and you can select the printables you like best.

Here is a list of games to include:

-Dot-to-dot

-Find the hidden picture

-Tracing letters and numbers

-Word finds

-Bible memory verses

3. Balloons with a Message

If your grandchild’s birthday is coming up, why not include a colorful balloon with a hidden message inside? This is a safe option for kids eight and older who will enjoy blowing up the balloon to find the secret message.

Simply write a note on a small piece of paper, roll it up, and tuck it inside the deflated balloon. Be sure to include instructions inside your grandchild’s birthday card letting them know there’s a special message waiting for them.

Here are a few fun phrases to include:

“I am celebrating you today!”

“Happiest birthday ever!”

“I am praying for another wonderful year!”

“You are my sunshine!”

4. Jokes or Riddles

One of the things I ask my grandkids regularly is if they have a new joke to tell. They love sharing funny riddles, Would You Rather questions, and knock-knock jokes they learned at school.

This is a fun way to connect with your grandchildren whether you live nearby or not. Find a few age-appropriate jokes online and write them on index cards. If you’re feeling extra creative, make a miniature joke book out of construction paper. Ask your grandkids to send you jokes in return and create a new family tradition that will keep everyone laughing.

Here are a few silly jokes for all ages:

Why did the banana go to the doctor? He wasn’t “peeling” well.

Why did the bicycle fall over? It was two-tired.

What do you call a piece of cheese that doesn’t belong to you? “Nacho cheese.”

5. Family Recipes

Do your grandkids like to help out in the kitchen? Why not send them a family recipe to try? Include some family history about the recipe and ask them to send a photo of the finished product. To make it even more fun, consider joining them through FaceTime and walking them through each step of the process. *Be sure they enlist parental supervision for this activity!

Here are some fun, kid-friendly recipes to try:

6. Scavenger Hunt Lists

Scavenger hunts are fun for all ages and can include mini-hunts indoors or wide-scale adventures outdoors. To create this fun activity for your grandkids, come up with a theme and include at least 20 things for your grandkids to find. Here are several creative ideas:

-Everything Blue Scavenger Hunt (including blue toys, clothes, and other items found around the house)

-At the Park Scavenger Hunt (including playground equipment and items found in nature)

-Downtown Scavenger Hunt (including popular landmarks, street signs, buildings, and more)

-At the Beach Scavenger Hunt (including seashells, surf boards, umbrellas, and all things beachy!)

7. Fun Facts

What are your grandchildren’s interests? Are they fascinated with reptiles or sea creatures? Research fun facts to include in your letters. Preface the facts with “Did you know?” and include as many unique things as possible.

Here are a few fun-fact topics to research:

-Baby animals that grow in pouches

-Volcanoes that have yet to erupt

-How different sports got started

-Unique creatures that live in the rainforest

Keep this fun idea circulating by asking your grandchild to send you a few fun facts in return. Enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope and tell them you’re waiting for their reply!

8. Family Tree Diagram

Family Tree

To make your letters more meaningful, consider sending your grandkids a family tree diagram to fill out. For younger children, include small, printed photos of their parents, grandparents, and great grandparents, asking them to glue them to the tree.

Here is a free family tree template to print and send. Be sure to include a list of your family members, offering a few interesting details about each. This will be a memorable activity for your grandchildren and, hopefully, a keepsake they’ll hold on to.

Most of all, stay connected to your grandkids by praying for them and building their faith. Short prayers and Bible verses are always wonderful options, letting them know how precious they are to God.

Handwritten letters might seem like a thing of the past, but they can really form a bond between you and your little ones. So, grab pen and paper and write that first letter today!

A Heartfelt Prayer for Your Grandkids:

Lord, please bless and keep my grandchildren. Protect them from all harm and lead them in the way they should go. Soften their hearts to know, love, and serve You all of their days. Thank You for providing ways to stay connected to them. Help me find even more creative ideas to include in my letters to them. In Jesus’ name, amen.
