6 Scriptures for Wives to Cling to in Difficult Seasons

If you are fortunate to be married for any extended length of time, you probably have come to the realization that the man you love so much can also be one of the hardest people to live with on the planet at times. Marriages go through seasons of flourishing joy and also through some pretty dark seasons.

In my own marriage, we have endured many dark seasons. As a wife, there have been many moments where I almost lost hope that we could overcome our challenges as a couple, that forgiveness was powerful enough to heal the deep well of bitterness that sat at the center of our marriage, and that I could trust God to bring us out of the darkness that was heavy on our marriage.

Through these difficult seasons, I held onto Jesus. By God’s grace, He did for and through us what we could not do for ourselves, and our marriage has made it out of the valley. Marriage isn’t easy, but it’s no longer a terrible weight on our lives. It’s a joyful partnership with manageable ups and downs, no longer an all-out war between our constantly competing needs. If God can do it for us, he can do it for you!

That being said, my husband has always been faithful to me, he has never hurt me, and I’ve always felt safe in my home. If that is not the case for you, your best step is to separate yourself from your spouse. Confide in those you can trust and find safety for you and your children. God never wants us to remain in an unsafe marriage.

Here are some Scriptures and encouragements to cling to in those difficult seasons of marriage:

1. Scriptures for Grace

Woman Praying

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 2 Corinthians 12:9

For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. John 1:16

But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8

And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. 2 Corinthians 9:8

In one rough moment in our marriage, I wondered how God could expect me to love, in my selfish view, such a sinful man. Quietly, the Holy Spirit whispered the truth of Romans 5:8 into my heart, reminding me that’s precisely the kind of love God extends to us. He loves me despite all my sins. I am called to love my husband with God’s unconditional and sacrificial love. My view of my husband’s sin is not just one. Only God can judge his heart in a just manner. When I compare his failures against mine, I am out of line. We must embrace grace and freely give it to our partners, and also trust that God’s grace is sufficient to meet our real needs.

2. Verses for Forgiveness

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. Ephesians 4:32

And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. Mark 11:25

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

But if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Matthew 6:15

“I, I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins." Isaiah 43:25

When we find ourselves struggling, we often lack the energy required to forgive, but it’s in these moments that the willingness to see past each other’s wrongs is even more vital. We can lean into the power of the Holy Spirit and ask him to do what only he can when it comes to the state of our hearts. By God’s grace alone, we can let go of our hurts and offer forgiveness to others and ourselves. God is great enough to cover our failures with his amazing grace.

3. Verses for Strength

Woman praying

I can do all things through him who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10

But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:31

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Ephesians 6:10

When we are weak, there is only one place we can turn to: the Lord! He is faithful to provide what we need. In our weakness, he shows up and strengthens us! You don’t have to strong-arm your way through this challenging season; instead, you can rest in the power of the Holy Spirit at work on your behalf.

4. Verses for Peace

4. Verses for Peace

"I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you all. 2 Thessalonians 3:16

You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Isaiah 26:3

And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Colossians 3:15

Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. Psalm 34:14

The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. Numbers 6:24-26

With God, we have access to peace that does not match our circumstances! It surpasses all understanding. This is such a gift when our lives feel chaotic. We can choose to be still and know God through the storm. He is with you; you can trust he will never leave or forsake you.

5. Verses for Hope

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. Romans 15:13

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1

Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayerRomans 12:12

When we are stuck in the dark, it’s easy—almost natural—to lose hope. I’ve walked through some hopeless seasons, only seeing my failures and how impossible our situation had become. When we only see ourselves, the situation appears pretty bleak. We have to fix our eyes on Jesus. He is our hope. With him, nothing is impossible when we have faith in Jesus.

6. Verses for Healing

woman studying and reading bible, how to dive deeper into scripture

Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved, for you are my praise. Jeremiah 17:14

He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. 1 Peter 2:24

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10

But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. Isaiah 53:5

Behold, I will bring to it health and healing, and I will heal them and reveal to them an abundance of prosperity and security. Jeremiah 33:6

Only God can heal many struggles. We need his miracle touch to show us his way and teach us his path, which always leads to freedom. Ask Him to show you the next proper steps you can take towards health, joy, wellness, and better habits. How can you find more peace of mind? Better care for your body? Control your emotions? Change unhealthy relational patterns? What does a breakthrough look like for you?
