What Does the Bible Say about How We Should Treat the LGBTQ+ Community?

The LGBTQ+ community has become a way of life that resonates with many in Gen Z, and it has become prominent in the mainstream culture. While it is not surprising that this movement is accepted and promoted within the secular world, many Christians are also promoting and endorsing the LGBTQ+ community. As Christians, we need to be loving, caring, and kind, but God does not want us to promote or accept homosexuality (Leviticus 18:22; 1 Corinthians 6:9). Even though many people may recoil when Christians adhere to the Bible, it is better to obey God rather than mankind (Acts 5:29).

Many Christians have started promoting the LGBTQ+ movement because they want to be relevant, viewed as accepting, and want to be accepted by the culture we live in.

We have to be cautious of this stance as the Bible tells us, friendship with the world is hatred toward God (James 4:4).

Biblical Christianity marries grace and truth. Withholding biblical truth from those struggling in this way is unloving, but we must also remember we are the hands and feet of Christ. How we treat the world is how they see God; therefore, kindness matters.

As Christians, we are called to love all people. However, it is essential to remember that loving someone does not mean we modify what the Bible says for their comfort. Instead, loving others means interceding in their lives when we see something going wrong, praying for them, and pointing them to the Lord. This is real love, one that is faithful to God's way.

1.  Jesus’ Kindness Leads Us to Repentance

Jesus nailed hands

“Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. Jesus answered, ‘Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish’” (Luke 13:1-5).

From Luke 13:1-5, we learn a vital lesson—we must repent or we will perish. This is what the Lord told the people of Israel and what He tells us today. All sin is sin, including the sin of homosexuality. There are no different levels of sin, nor is one sin worse than any other. However, Jesus instructs us all to repent. Without repentance, there can be no true conversion in a person’s life.

The Bible is still relevant today, and the Lord’s teaching stands. Unless we repent, we will perish. God created marriage to be between a man and a woman, and anything outside of this breaks His design for marriage and is not in our best interest (Genesis 2:24). God’s way is narrow, but his instructions are for our benefit. When we are willing to turn towards him, we are given access to the abundant life

2. Jesus Invites Us to Follow Him

“Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me’” (Matthew 16:24).

The Bible tells all people to follow Him regardless of their sexual identity, gender, racial background, socioeconomic status, religious beliefs, or past sins! Jesus tells us this truth in Matthew 16:24. He says that whoever wants to be His disciple must deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow Him. He wants people from the LGBTQ+ community to follow Him.

The LGBTQ+ community can be inviting for many individuals because it feels safe for them. They finally found a sense of belonging within this group of people. The Bible wants us to know that all people belong with Him, not with a specific group of people on this earth. There is often a sense of felt connection within the LGBTQ+ community, but with the Lord, it is a true place of belonging that will never fail. All we need to do is follow Him.

When we look closer at Matthew 16:24, we see the Lord directing us to deny ourselves and take up our cross. For those in the LGBTQ+ community, they would have to deny themselves the sin of homosexuality. In other words, they would need to rely on the Holy Spirit to empower them to lay down this part of their life in obedience to God’s Word. While this can be hard, with God, all things are possible.

3. Jesus Offers Rest When We Come to Him

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

Another thing the Bible says about how we should treat the LGBTQ+ community is that we should encourage them to turn to Jesus. While some Christians are overly accepting of homosexuality to the point that it is detrimental, there are other Christians who are mean to those struggling with homosexuality. Either of these extremes is not good. Instead, we need to approach those in the LGBTQ+ community with a heart focused on Jesus. Jesus tells all people to come to Him and He will give them rest (Matthew 11:28-30).

If you notice, there are no different commands being given to those who struggle with homosexuality compared to those who don’t struggle with homosexuality. Different people struggle with other sins, but it doesn’t mean one is harder or less difficult to deal with. When the Lord tells us that we can come to Him and He will give us rest, He applies this to all people. Whether someone lives in sin, God wants them to go to Him and find rest. If you are someone who is present in the LGBTQ+ community, know that you can find true comfort in the Lord. The comfort He will provide lasts forever and will never fail you.

4. Jesus Loves You

4. Jesus Loves You

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39).

If there is one thing the Bible says about how we should treat the LGBTQ+ community, it is to help them know that Jesus loves them. Jesus’ love is not reserved for only a select group of people. Rather, His love abounds for everyone as we are all part of His beloved creation. A part of his love is a path to freedom.

John 8:36 says,” So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

He doesn’t want us to continue living a life of sin.

Jesus loves you and can help you with these struggles. Jesus desires for you to have a relationship with Him above all else. Jesus is focused on your sanctification, not your relationship status. If you are someone in the LGBTQ+ community, He loves you just as you are. When we give our lives to the Lord, he offers us the strength and grace to find freedom from sin.

5.  You Are a New Creation in Christ

New Life journal

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

If you have decided to place faith in Jesus, know you are a new creation in Him. Behold, your old life has ended, and your new life in Christ is just starting. It is a beautiful thing to be able to have a new start in life because of the Lord. We are given forgiveness, redemption, and eternal life by believing in Him. This gift is from the Lord, as there is nothing we did to earn this blessing (Ephesians 2:8-9).

As a new creation in Christ, Jesus calls you to abide in Him. Jesus loves you and truly wants the best for you. There is only joy, love, and support when you turn to the Lord. He will never cast you aside or judge you for sins already forgiven.

The Lord doesn’t hate anyone, including individuals who struggle with homosexuality. He wants them to come to know Him, turn away from this sinful life, and follow Him, but He never hated anyone. He loves you, and it is time to enter the new life He has called you into. This life is where you belong and will find true fulfillment and belonging. With the Lord, you will finally feel at home, loved, and known.
