7 Invisible Lies Keeping Christian Men Stuck
For decades, men like me fought this the same way. Accountability software. Internet filters. A partner who checked in on Tuesdays. More prayer, more willpower, more promises that this time was the last time.

The Scope of the Struggle
Barna Research (2024) put numbers to what most churches have never said out loud. 75% of Christian men report this on some level. Among practicing Christians, 54% report it, with nearly 25% caught in it weekly or daily. Two in three pastors (67%) have carried this themselves. 18% say it's a current battle. Only about 10% of churches offer any real program to help.
I'll say the quiet part. The silence has left men convinced they're the exception. They've tried what their church recommended. When it didn't hold, they concluded something was uniquely wrong with them. Nothing is. You're the norm.
Why Behavior-Level Solutions Keep Failing
Blockers, apps, accountability partners. Not bad practices. Good practices pointed at the wrong thing. It works about as well as mowing a field of weeds. Every Saturday, the field looks clean. Every Wednesday, the weeds are back because nothing underneath the soil was ever touched. The mower was never going to reach the root. That was never what a mower was for.
Filters tell a man what not to do. They never touch why he wants to. Willpower is a finite resource. It depletes across a day. When it's the only tool you have, the outcome isn't a character verdict. It's arithmetic.
The Belief Underneath the Behavior
Scripture puts the issue in the same place the research does. Paul instructs believers to take every thought captive (2 Corinthians 10:5). That presumes thoughts are the battlefield. Romans 12:2 calls for renewing the mind, not managing the behavior. And Jesus names the enemy's native weapon by name. He is a liar and the father of lies (John 8:44).
So here's what that points to. If the enemy's primary weapon is a lie, then somewhere underneath the behavior, one is being believed. I call these invisible lies. Invisible because you don't experience them as beliefs. You experience them as plain facts about yourself. So obvious you never examine them. And a belief that's never examined is never dismantled. It just keeps producing.
What Makes This Different from Another Devotional
