A Prayer for Those Struggling to Love Their Neighbor

Jesus taught that loving God and loving our neighbor are the greatest commandments. Yet if we are honest, loving others is not always easy.

Fear, frustration, politics, hurt, busyness, and differences can quietly harden our hearts toward the people around us. But throughout Scripture, God consistently calls His people to care for the vulnerable, the overlooked, and the stranger.

This devotional from Sophia Bricker reminds us that the Israelites once lived as foreigners in Egypt and understood what it meant to feel mistreated and unseen. Because God had shown them compassion, they were called to extend that same love to others.

Jesus reinforced this truth in the New Testament through the parable of the Good Samaritan. Loving our neighbor is not limited to those who look like us, agree with us, or live near us. Biblical love crosses barriers and reflects the heart of Christ.

We may not change the whole world overnight, but small acts of compassion matter deeply. Welcoming someone, helping the hurting, showing kindness, speaking up for the vulnerable, or simply noticing those who feel unseen can become powerful reflections of God’s love.

God often works through ordinary people willing to love faithfully.

Prayer

Great God,
Teach me to love others with compassion, patience, and grace. Remove fear, pride, frustration, and judgment from my heart. Open my eyes to the needs around me and help me reflect the kindness and love of Jesus in my words and actions. Guide me to opportunities where I can serve others faithfully and point people toward Your goodness. Amen.
