Can Christians worship God outdoors just as meaningfully as they do inside a church building? Lia Girard reflects on the beauty of creation, Jesus’ ministry in outdoor settings, and Acts 17:24, which reminds believers that God is not confined to temples made by human hands. This devotional encourages Christians to notice God’s handiwork in nature while remembering that creation points to the Creator and that worship can happen anywhere.

Can Christians Worship God Outside a Church Building?

Yes. Christians can pray, worship, read Scripture, and gather in Jesus’ name anywhere.

The New Testament does not teach that God is confined to a church building. Acts 17:24 says that the Lord of heaven and earth does not live in temples built by human hands.

Church buildings can be valuable places for gathered worship and community, but God’s presence is not limited to them.

What Does Matthew 18:20 Mean?

Matthew 18:20 says:

“For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”

In context, Jesus is speaking about agreement, accountability, and life together among believers. The verse is not primarily a definition of church, but it does affirm Jesus’ presence with believers who gather in His name.

Does Nature Reveal God?

Creation can reveal God’s power, creativity, order, and beauty.

Christians do not worship nature itself. Instead, nature can direct attention toward the Creator.

A sunrise, mountain range, ocean, or forest can become an occasion for gratitude and worship when it reminds us of God’s handiwork.

Did Jesus Often Teach Outdoors?

Yes. The Gospels frequently show Jesus teaching and ministering in open-air settings such as hillsides, roads, shorelines, boats, gardens, and wilderness areas.

That does not make outdoor worship spiritually superior to worship in a building. It simply shows that Jesus’ ministry was not confined to religious structures.

What Is the Church?

The Greek word ekklesia refers to an assembly or gathering of people.

In the New Testament, “church” primarily refers to the community of believers rather than a physical building.

That means Christians can gather as the church in many settings while still valuing regular fellowship, teaching, prayer, and worship with other believers.
