A Prayer When a Close Relationship Changes | Your Daily Prayer
Some relationships shape the direction of our lives.
A parent teaches us how to persevere.
A coach sees potential before we recognize it.
A teacher awakens a gift.
A manager entrusts us with greater responsibility.
A pastor, ministry leader, or spiritual mentor helps us hear God more clearly.
When one of those relationships changes, the grief can feel surprisingly deep.
Perhaps the person retires, moves away, changes roles, or is no longer available to guide us. Sometimes the transition is expected. Other times it arrives suddenly, leaving us unsure of what to do next.
Elisha understood this kind of change.
He had faithfully followed Elijah, learning from his ministry and remaining beside him even when others urged him to stay behind. Elisha knew that Elijah’s departure was coming, but knowing did not make the separation easy.
Before Elijah was taken away, he asked Elisha what he could do for him.
Elisha replied, “Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit.”
His request was not simply about receiving power. It reflected a desire to faithfully continue the work God had begun through his mentor.
Elisha was losing Elijah’s physical presence, but he was not losing God’s calling.
The relationship was changing.
The mission was continuing.
And God would remain faithful.
“When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, ‘Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?’
‘Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit,’ Elisha replied.”
