Autumn can bring beautiful traditions, cooler weather, and changing leaves, but it can also bring financial concerns, busy family schedules, seasonal illnesses, approaching holidays, and anxiety about everything that still needs to happen before the year ends. Before we know it, we're carrying worries about days we haven't even lived yet.

In this Your Nightly Prayer devotional, Michelle Treacy reflects on Isaiah 26:3: “You will keep in perfect peace, those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” Isaiah connects peace not with perfect circumstances but with a steadfast mind and continued trust in God. When our thoughts wander into uncertain futures, Scripture invites us to continually return our attention to the One whose character remains unchanged.

What does God's “perfect peace” mean for someone who is worried about the future? Biblical peace does not mean that Christians never experience anxious thoughts, difficult circumstances, or uncertainty. Nor does trusting God guarantee that everything in the month ahead will happen exactly as we hope. Instead, God's peace gives us a steady place to return when our minds begin carrying tomorrow before tomorrow arrives.

As October begins, you don't need to solve the entire month tonight. You can bring God your concerns about money, health, family, work, holidays, and the unknown, while receiving the grace available for today. Lamentations 3:22-23 reminds us that God's mercies are new every morning. Rather than borrowing tomorrow's worries, ask God to recalibrate your focus, steady your thoughts, and help you enter this new month trusting Him one day at a time.

What does Isaiah 26:3 mean?

Isaiah 26:3 teaches that lasting peace is rooted in trusting God and keeping our minds steadfast on Him. It does not promise a life without difficult circumstances or anxious thoughts. Instead, it points believers toward God as the steady focus they can continually return to when worry and uncertainty threaten their peace.
