In this Your Nightly Prayer devotional, Lynette Kittle reflects on John 15:16, where Jesus tells His followers that He chose and appointed them to “bear fruit—fruit that will last.” Biblical fruitfulness is different from simply being productive. Some of God’s most significant work develops slowly through studying and obeying Scripture, prayer, fasting, serving others, sharing the Gospel, encouraging another believer, and faithfully planting seeds whose results we may never fully see.

First Corinthians 3:7-9 reminds us that while one person plants and another waters, God is the One who makes things grow. That truth releases us from the exhausting pressure to manufacture results. We are called to obedience and faithfulness, but the outcome ultimately belongs to Him. Galatians 5:22-23 also points us toward another kind of growth that can easily be overlooked: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control developing within us through the work of the Holy Spirit.

Tonight, instead of measuring yourself only by what you accomplished, consider what God may be cultivating in and through you. The conversation where you shared truth, the prayer no one else heard, the act of service that received no recognition, or the small seed of encouragement you planted may carry more eternal significance than you realize. Ask God to redirect your definition of success and help you faithfully bear fruit that lasts for His purposes and glory.
