As fall moves toward winter and daylight disappears earlier, many people notice a shift in their energy, emotions, motivation, and sense of connection. Shorter days can make loneliness feel louder and sadness feel heavier, especially for those who struggle with seasonal depression or seasonal affective disorder.

In this Your Nightly Prayer devotional, Amber Ginter reflects on Isaiah 60:19 and the promise that the Lord Himself will be our everlasting light. Scripture does not deny the reality of darkness, whether physical, emotional, or spiritual. Instead, it reminds us that darkness does not have the final word. God’s presence remains steady even when our surroundings—and our feelings—grow dim.

Jesus reinforces this hope in John 12:46, declaring that He came into the world as light. That does not mean believers are immune from depression, loneliness, fear, or emotional heaviness. It means that difficult seasons do not separate us from His presence. We can bring sadness honestly to God while also receiving practical support through trusted relationships, counseling, medical care, healthy routines, and other forms of help when needed.

If the changing season has left you feeling more tired, isolated, anxious, or low, tonight is an invitation to stop hiding that heaviness. Bring it to God. Remember the times His light has met you before. Ask Him to make His presence known in this season, and let each small source of light become a reminder that you are not facing the darkness alone.
