Hope for the Person Starting Over | Your Nightly Prayer
Are you starting over after a painful season but finding it difficult to believe that something good could happen again? After heartbreak, disappointment, loss, failure, or another difficult experience, the mind can continue replaying what happened long after circumstances begin to change. Even when life finally becomes peaceful, you may find yourself waiting for the next problem, wondering when the other shoe will drop, or protecting yourself from hope because you don't want to be disappointed again.
In this Your Nightly Prayer devotional, Shea Smith reflects on Isaiah 42:9 and God's promise that the former things have taken place and new things are springing forth. The greatest source of hope in this passage isn't simply that circumstances can change. It is the character of the God who declares what comes next. Scripture reminds us that God is faithful, steady, unchanging, compassionate, merciful, and steadfast in His love. Those truths give us something secure to hold onto when the future still feels uncertain.
If you're trying to start over after a hard season, struggling to trust again, replaying painful memories, or feeling anxious when life begins to go well, this devotional offers biblical encouragement for moving forward without pretending the past never happened. Healing doesn't require forgetting your story or guaranteeing that you'll never experience difficulty again. Instead, hope grows as we remember that whatever happens next, we will not face it apart from God's presence.
Tonight, allow God to meet you in the place where fear and hope collide. Bring Him the memories you keep replaying, the lies that tell you another disappointment is inevitable, and the future you're hesitant to embrace. As you remember His faithfulness in the past, ask Him for deeper trust in the present and renewed hope for the new things He may be bringing to life. Your story is not defined only by what you've survived. By God's grace, hope can begin growing there too.
