Trusting God in Quiet Disappointment | Your Nightly Prayer
Maybe you prayed faithfully for healing and the diagnosis still came. You worked hard and the opportunity disappeared. A relationship you thought God would restore ended anyway. Or you’ve looked at suffering and injustice around you and wondered how a good and sovereign God could allow life to unfold this way. For Christians, admitting disappointment with God can feel especially uncomfortable because we may fear that our questions reveal weak faith.
In this Your Nightly Prayer devotional, Peyton Garland reflects on Psalm 42:11 and the psalmist’s decision to speak directly to his downcast soul: “Put your hope in God.” Disappointment can come from people we love, circumstances beyond our control, our own choices, and even expectations we believed God would fulfill. When those expectations collapse, hurt can turn into skepticism, and we may begin questioning God’s goodness, sovereignty, or love.
Scripture doesn’t require us to pretend difficult outcomes don’t hurt, but it does invite us to approach God with humility about the limits of our own perspective. Proverbs 11:2, James 4:6, and Romans 12:3 remind us that human understanding is incomplete. We see one moment, one perspective, and one small piece of a much larger story. Humility allows us to acknowledge that we don’t have every answer while continuing to trust the character of the One who does.
If you’re wrestling with unanswered prayer, disappointment, broken trust, grief, injustice, or circumstances that have made you question God, tonight is an invitation to bring those thoughts into His presence rather than quietly allowing them to harden your heart. You don’t have to understand every part of your story tonight. Ask God for wisdom where you’re confused, humility where you’re trying to control what you cannot, and hope when your heart feels downcast.
