The desire for control often becomes strongest when life feels uncertain. A health concern, financial pressure, relationship struggle, family problem, or major decision can leave us mentally rehearsing every possible scenario and wondering what else we need to do to make everything turn out right.

In this Your Nightly Prayer devotional, Shea Smith reflects on Zechariah 4:6 and God's message to Zerubbabel: “Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit.” After the Israelites returned from exile, Zerubbabel faced the enormous responsibility of rebuilding amid discouragement and limited resources. God's response was not a command to manufacture more strength. It was a reminder that the work ultimately depended on power greater than his own.

Releasing control does not mean becoming passive, neglecting responsibilities, or refusing to take wise action. There may still be conversations to have, decisions to make, appointments to attend, budgets to create, and difficult next steps to take. Biblical surrender means learning to distinguish between faithful action and the exhausting attempt to control outcomes that were never ours to guarantee.

If anxiety has you white-knuckling an uncertain situation tonight, Psalm 46:10 offers another invitation: be still and remember who God is. Ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom about your next faithful step, then release the scenarios you cannot control. You do not need to solve your entire future tonight. Ephesians 3:20-21 reminds us that God's power exceeds the limits of what we can accomplish or imagine. Let tonight become a moment of surrender: do what God has placed in your hands, and trust Him with what He has not.

Putting her Master of Divinity to work by furiously typing about Jesus during naptimes. Posting encouragement and #momlife reels on Instagram. Conquering virtual hills on her Peloton. Renovating "the dream home" with her husband. Co-hosting her church's podcast. Homeschooling the littles. Leading a Barre class. Preaching, teaching, and storytelling. And finally, pretending she will keep her indoor plants alive...this time!
