Spiritual drift does not always begin with a dramatic decision to walk away from faith. Often, it happens quietly. Work gets busier. Family responsibilities increase. Good opportunities fill the calendar. Screens consume more attention. Even meaningful commitments can slowly crowd out prayer, Scripture, and the quiet attention we once gave to Jesus.

In this Your Nightly Prayer devotional, Britt Mooney reflects on Colossians 3:1 and the call to “set your hearts on things above.” Using the image of learning to shoot a basketball, he explores a simple spiritual truth: we tend to move toward what we focus on. When our attention remains fixed on Christ, our priorities follow. But when distraction takes over, even good things can become consuming things that slowly shift Jesus away from the center.

If you’ve been feeling spiritually unfocused, overwhelmed by busyness, ashamed of drifting, or simply aware that God has not been receiving your best attention lately, this devotional offers a gracious invitation to return. Matthew 14 reminds us how quickly fear and distraction can pull our eyes away from Jesus, while Colossians points us back to the One who is our true life and eternal hope.

Tonight, you don’t need to punish yourself for becoming distracted. You can simply notice what has captured your attention, bring it honestly before God, and ask Him to re-order your heart. Through prayer, Scripture, worship, rest, and intentional spiritual disciplines, you can begin to put Christ back at the center and trust His grace to keep drawing you closer.
