What’s valuable!
But the LORD shall endure forever... Psalms 9:7 (NKJV)
There’s a connection between permanence and value. We’ll pay more for a particular product that we think will last longer. Whether it’s a chewing gum that holds its flavor, a pair of shoes that won’t wear out, or a truck that’s built to last, we attach a lot of value to “staying power.”
David focuses on this principle in Psalm Chapter 9. Towards the start of his Psalm, he addresses his enemies, the wicked, and the nations that have opposed God’s people. He describes how the Lord has prevailed over all of them, how their earthly empires were overthrown by His Almighty Arm, and how their cities and the very memory of them have vanished (Psalm 9:3-6).
Then, after presenting the passing and temporary nature of the ungodly, he presents quite a contrast by declaring, “But the LORD shall endure forever.” To put it another way, all the kings and kingdoms of this world are insignificant in comparison to God. They’re long gone while He still remains.
How should this truth impact our lives practically? Above all else, it should make us value Him and all that’s encompassed in a relationship with Him.
If God is just “one more thing” in life that competes for our attention or affections, something is really wrong. Something needs to happen in our hearts. We need to see things the way David presents them here. We need to be reminded of the stark contrast between the temporary nature of this life and the permanence of God.
When we do, we’ll value Him appropriately, and we’ll order our lives accordingly. We’ll make decisions based on His permanence, we’ll choose to invest our lives in what doesn’t fade or pass away, and we’ll do so gladly because we’ll recognize the great value in doing so.
Think About It…
What does this passage reveal to me about God?
What does this passage reveal to me about myself?
Based on this, what changes do I need to make?
What is my prayer for today?
