"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth…” Matthew 6:19 (NKJV)
As we’ve seen throughout this month, an eternal awareness has a powerful impact on the way we life our lives here on earth. And if you were to ask most people who have a belief in an afterlife if it affects this life, they would probably agree that it does.
But how do we measure that? How can you really tell if eternity is influencing their now? One way of telling is by how they view their finances.
“Finances…that’s a bit personal, don’t you think? I can’t believe you’re going to go there!” Jesus did. In fact, He’s the one who stated very specifically that the way we handle our earthly resources will tell a lot about our eternal outlook:
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal;but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:19-21 NKJV)
It’s an age-old principle: Our interests affect our investments. If we’re interested in earthly things, we’ll invest in earthly things. If we’re interested in eternal things, we’ll invest in eternal things. According to Jesus, it’s as simple as that! He also tells us that it’s much wiser to invest in Heaven, because it’s an investment that never depreciates or fails.
So what are you personally investing in? Is there any eternal theme when it comes to where your money goes? Are you spending your resources on causes that promote God’s Kingdom and on things that will stand the test of time?
If, in fact, we’re more interested in the life to come than this one, it’s going to show in what we choose to invest in. And it’s the wisest choice we can make, because as Jesus shared, an investment in eternity lasts for eternity.
Think About It…
What does this passage reveal to me about God?
What does this passage reveal to me about myself?
Based on this, what changes do I need to make?
What is my prayer for today?
