Kingdom qualities

Then they brought little children to Him, that He might touch them; but the disciples rebuked those who brought them. Mark 10:13 (NKJV)

A trend is becoming increasingly evident as the disciples start to become more prominent in the Gospel of Mark. We see them saying and doing things that are directly opposite of what Jesus would have them say and do. Case in point, when little children are brought to Jesus so that He could bless them, they assume this wasn’t on their Master’s agenda and start to break things up. Watch what Jesus says:

But when Jesus saw it, He was greatly displeased and said to them, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God. Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it. Mark 10:14-15 (NKJV)

Not only does Jesus affirm the value of children by commanding they be brought to Him, but He takes it even further by exalting them! In essence He says, “Guys, these little ones that you don’t find very important have a leg-up on you when it comes to God’s Kingdom. You actually need to learn a few things from them.” Can you imagine how this must have hit these men?

But Jesus is always right, and He’s right about children having an advantage in God’s Kingdom. They aren’t as tainted by this world and its ways as those of us who are “grown up.” We may be grown up, but we’ve grown up in an environment that’s inherently contrary to God’s ways.

Consider this: Children are fine with being dependent on someone greater than themselves. They trust that someone is going to protect and provide for them. They typically aren’t seeking their own glory. They gladly receive what they’re given, and they don’t have difficulty enjoying life.

These are just a few “Kingdom qualities” that should characterize our lives, and we can learn a lot from the children who posses them.
