The Giving Gauge - Monday, February 11th 2013

2 Corinthians 8:9

"For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich."
NKJV

Money is a powerful tool and what we do with money is very revealing. Money is powerful because it can either control us or hurt our lives, or we can control money and bless others. The question is this, are you controlling your money how you should? We can gauge money's power over us often by simply looking at our giving records. Giving financially to your church shows your love for God. Giving also shows you want others to hear the Gospel, that you want to help others who are less fortunate, and that you want to share the costs of having church.

On the other hand, not giving or giving very little says bad things about you. When you give, you don't just give your money, you give away your selfishness, your materialism, your greed. Not tithing or not giving is one of the surest signs that you are struggling with materialism, selfishness and greed. Do you want to fail in something as temporary as money? Jesus didn't. He gave it all away, including His very life. Imagine if we all lived lives of selflessness and generosity like our Savior. Imagine what our churches and other ministries could do if everyone gave something. Churches could feed thousands, share the Gospel to everyone and be a shining beacon of light.

Life Lesson: Giving shows we love people, God and the cause of Christ. Finances are a very revealing test.

Dear God,
Thank You for all that You have given me. Whether I have a little or a lot, I desire to give of my finances so that the work of Jesus Christ can continue. I understand that this is not just about money, but also about my spiritual growth. Help me to let go of any selfishness and to walk in obedience to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Living to tell what He died to say,
Pastor David McGee
