Stumbling Block - Wednesday, May 30th 2012

1 Corinthians 8:8-9

"But food does not commend us to God; for neither if we eat are we the better, nor if we do not eat are we the worse. But beware lest somehow this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to those who are weak."
NKJV

We are all different. This is true in our personalities, our life circumstances and our spiritual walks. At any given church, you will find both mature and immature believers. In 1 Corinthians 8, Paul is dealing with these two groups who were wrestling with eating meat sacrificed to idols. The mature believers knew that there was nothing evil about the meat itself, yet the less mature believers still did not think it was right. So what was a mature believer to do?

...Die to themselves and think of others first.

Paul challenges the mature believers to not fight over petty things but instead, be willing to give up freedoms in order to keep a brother from stumbling. In fact, in verse thirteen he writes, "Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never again eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble." Paul is willing to give up eating meat for the sake of his brother. That is a great picture of sacrificial love. Whether it is alcohol, movies, music or even meat - are you willing to put it aside for the sake of your brother?

Life Lesson: Through love and knowledge, people who are stronger in the Lord should help one another as well as those who are weaker in the Lord.

Dear Father,
Thank You for Your love. I pray that You would help me to love others even if it means giving up something in my life. May the actions and words of my life point to You and You alone, causing no one to stumble. Fill me with Your Spirit so that I may be a beacon of light to this world. Thank You Lord for all that You are doing in my life to make me more like Jesus. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Living to tell what He died to say,
