Fear and Trembling
“Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed-not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence-continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling…” -Philippians 2:12
The power of who God is and what God can do should lead us to fear Him. But our definition of fear is often softer than it should be. We convince ourselves that fearing God means to simply stand in awe of Him. And while that is certainly part of fearing God, the reality is that there should always be room for “fear and trembling” before God.
The fact is, God is God. He is omniscient, omnipresent, and omnipotent. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. He is the creator; we are the creation. So no matter what our thinking is about fearing God, we should always have an element of trembling before His awesome power and nature. It’s not about cowering in a corner, afraid that He is out to get us. Rather, it’s out of a reverence and full acknowledgment that God is God, and we are not.
Thank God for who He is and what He can do in your life. Admit to Him your need for His power in your life. And pray for humility as you stand before Him each day.
