God’s gift of redemption
“When we were children we were grateful to those who filled our stockings at Christmas time. Why are we not grateful to God for filling our stockings with legs?”– Gilbert K. Chesterton
Back in the day, when my kids were smaller and I healed faster, I loved wrestling with my kids in the living room. One evening, I was wrestling with Cameron and Annika. There were three of us and two stuffed toys. The kids’ goal was to stay away from me.
At one point, I had a toy in one hand and I had my daughter Annika trapped in the other arm. Cameron had the other toy and he was free. I looked at him and said, “Cameron, I'll trade you!” “What?” “You give me the toy, I'll give you Annika.” He looked at Annika, and he looked at his toy, and you could see the gears turning in his head. “Shall I give it or not?” He did, and Annika broke free.
It was a teachable moment. I called time out.
“That's called ‘redemption,’” I said. They looked at me a little funny. “Annika was captured, she was in bondage, she was enslaved to me, she couldn't get out. But you paid a price for her freedom.” I think they understood, but the lights really started to go on when I made the Christmas connection.
“Redemption means to purchase at a price. Jesus came to earth so He could die on the cross. He paid a massive price! He shed His blood because we were in bondage to sin. We were captured by sin – we couldn't not sin. But when Jesus died on the cross, He not only paid the penalty for our sin, but He released us from the power of sin as well, and we became FREE! It is now possible to walk in purity and righteousness!”
In all honesty, I’m not sure they understood all that. But I hoped the truth would be stored away somewhere in their souls, ready to be retrieved when they needed it.
In him [Jesus]we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s gracethat he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding.– Ephesians 1:7-8
Dear God, thank You for sending Your Son. Thank You for the incredible gift of redemption. Thank You for breaking the bonds of sin so that I can walk freely with You today choosing to follow the lead of Your Spirit. Amen.
